Matthew Ployd Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Matthew George Ployd, 83, husband of the late Marian R. Ployd, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004 after a short illness. Prior to living in Newport News, Matthew was a longtime resident of Norristown, Pa. Born in Lancaster, Pa., on July 18, 1920, Mr. Ployd spent his childhood in Texas, and later attended Norristown, Pa., area schools. He graduated from Eisenhower Senior High School in 1938. During World War II, Mr. Ployd served in Europe as a sergeant with the United States Army Artillery. After the War, Mr. Ployd was employed by Lee Tire & Rubber Co., as a cost accountant. In the early '60's, Mr. Ployd became the first computer programmer for Peoples Bank & Trust Co. He was instrumental in that institution's transition to a computerized banking system. He subsequently worked as a Senior Programmer/Analyst for City Stores Corporation, a national holding company, until his retirement. Mr. Ployd is survived by his daughter, Marian, and his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Patricia Ployd, all of 826 Garrow Road, two grandsons, Matthew and his wife, Gayle, of Smithfield, Adam Ployd and his wife, Anne, of Atlanta, Ga., two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Emily Ployd of Smithfield. The funeral service will be private and at a time set by the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the PBS Broadcasting, c/o WHRO-TV15, 5200 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23508, or the ASPCA, 424 East 92nd St., New York, NY 10128. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton.
