May Byrd Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - May "Belle" Haltiwanger Byrd, 68, went home to be with the Lord on December 14, 2012 after a brief illness. She was born March 14, 1944, and was a lifelong resident of Newport News, VA. She graduated from Huntington High School in the Class of 1962. She received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and her Master of Arts degree in Guidance from Hampton (Institute) University in 1966 and 1975. She taught in the Newport News Public School System at Lee Hall Elementary School, Walter Reed Elementary School, and Booker T. Washington Elementary School. After leaving the school system, she became Owner and Director of a very successful Child Care Business in her home for more than 40 years. In 1992, she became Owner and Director of an additional prestigious Child Care Business at Warwick Kids' Academy, both facilities operating until this present time. May Byrd was gifted in teaching children how to read and mentoring them in behaviors that would make them successful upon entering first grade in elementary school. Her graduates from kindergarten were always high achievers, advanced readers, and many were selected for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program, as well as skipping grade levels in elementary school. Through the years, May received many wonderful reports on the success and accomplishments of her kindergarten graduates from her two Child Care facilities. She was joined in holy matrimony to her husband, Edward Byrd, and they enjoyed 47 years of unparalleled love and companionship. They were blessed with two beautiful sons: Kevin Byrd and Johnathan Byrd, and they raised their grandson, Michael Byrd. She was preceded in death by her parents: Samuel and Mable Haltiwanger; and two brothers: Howard Haltiwanger and John Haltiwanger, and a daughter-in-law, Evelyn (Nieci) Byrd. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband, Edward Byrd, Newport News, VA; two sons: Kevin (Lisa) Byrd, Newport News, VA., and Johnathan Byrd, Miami FL; three grandchildren: Michael Byrd, Malikah Byrd and Kevin Byrd, Jr.; one great grandchild: Serenity; two brothers: Solomon (Juanita) Haltiwanger, Newport News, VA; and Samuel ?Ollie? (Virginia) Haltiwanger, Williamsburg, VA; six sisters: Lillie (Calvin) Miller, Somerdale, NJ; Mable (Ezra) Hill, Hampton, VA; Rhoda (Alponso) Holt, Newport News, VA; Patricia (Bernie) Manning, Harrisburg, PA; Minerva (James) McNair, Hampton, VA; and Gardenia (Charles) Burton, Houston, TX; one brother-in-law, Linwood (Gail) Byrd, Hampton, VA; two goddaughters, Latonya Holman, Waldorf, MD, and Bianca May Hill, Chesterfield, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives; the teachers, parents and children of her Home Child Care Center and Warwick Kids' Academy; and the children she taught at Booker T. Washington Elementary School that she kept contact with through the years. A viewing will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 from noon to 6:00 pm at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012, 11:00am at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple. Condolences may be sent to www.cookebros.com

Wow May, it´s been 12 tears since you transitioned home. Arielle will be 12 on the 19th. And as you know, welcomed your grandson, Lil Jonathan Edward Byrd into the family. He looks like his Dad and has your smile. Well, keep on praising our LORD and Savior til I get there. Really miss you and Cue and Mable Pearl immensely. Thanks for the memories and never failing love.

Here I sit, 10 years since your passing, getting ready to celebrate Arielle's 10th birthday. It's amazing to see yu and Mother Pearl in her. She's really a joy and delight to be around. Even though she has cerebral palsy and autism she is excelling beyond expectations. she has that Borum smile and loves life. I think of you at every visit and phone call. Now you have Ed there with you, as well as Pat and Lillie. The circle shrinks here and expand in heaven. Give the family a Hallelujah Hello for me. See ya when I get there, Cuz.

Remembering you May, on this anniversary of our transition home to GOD. Every day, I am reminded of the day when I think, talk to, and/or hear the voice of Arielle, who will be eight on the 19th. It is still rough knowing I missed your homegoing service, But GOD, had another task for me. Ensuring Arielle was born safely and Michele' taken care of appropriately. Just know that my girls are fine! I Miss you Cousin! See Ya When I get there!

to the Byrd and Haltiwanger families and the staff at WKA, I was saddened to hear about the passing of Mrs. May Byrd. Although I did not have a close personal relationship with her, she touched my life deeply. My child had a warm, loving place to learn and I had the knowledge that my child was in an environment that would shape her whole life.I can never repay Mrs.Byrd for all that she has done by creating this school, but will continue to let people know what a wonderful job is being done there! Please accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers.

To The Haliwanger & Byrd Families,
I was saddened to read of another of my NNN neighbors had passed.
Not being able to continue residing there, I learn of such occurences after the fact basically by way of internet during the few hours weekly it is available to me.
I did not Know Mrs. Byrd as well as her family that lived on Center Avenue. I also did not see her as frequently either.
I did not know that she was a Pirate Alumni until now. I did not attend many Alumni Chapter meetings until the late 1980's myself. I would have appreciated any conversations concerning and relating to Hampton.
God Bless,

Cousin Brenda

December 21, 2012

TO Ed, Kevin, Johnathan and the rest of my Haltiwanger-Borum-Gatling Family.

My heart is grieved that the LORD in his wisdom chose to call my dear, real, funny and inspiring Cousin home to dwell with HIM. Her sudden transition is still difficult to comprehend. However, as one link in our family circle is broken here on earth and woven in heaven, we have the Blessed Assurance that May laid down her trophies, has her crown for a life well done and enjoys eternal life with those who've gone before, around GOD's Great White Throne.

Please know my absence is only due to being needed in Florida to care for Michele' and welcome my granddaughter Arielle, into the world (a new link in our family chain).
My Prayers are forever with my loving and precious family at this diffcult time in our life history.

I was sooo taken aback when I looked in the obits today to see one of the most finest people in the world listed, Mrs. Byrd. Ms Byrd was a great friend, teacher (fourth (4th) grade at Booker T. Washington School. I had just thought about Mrs. Byrd last week as the holidays are upon us, she was in my thoughts. I will never ever forget her as long as I live, I LOVED Mrs. Byrd greatly! Mrs. Byrd help to mold me into the person I am today! I will forever have her in my heart, God bless you Mr. Byrd, Johnathan and Kevin. Your wife/Mom was truly a great person. Love, Peggy, Pat, Leroy and Paulette Jones and the Outlaw family.

To The Byrd Family,

I can remember Mrs. Byrd as my 4th grade teacher at Walter Reed, she was one of my best teachers, her and Ms. Whitley.

I can always remember my 2nd and 4th grade teachers, the others not so much.

She taught me so much in that very short year. I believe her guidance assisted in my attending college and graduating against many other obstacles. I became a professional civil service employee.

I remember she came to East End one Saturday to pick up her 4th grade students to have a party for us at her Deer Park apartment. She was such a wonderful lady and a motivating and positve influence in my life.

God rest her soul and keep her family in comfort and prayer.

I am a "graduate" of Mrs. Byrd's preschool. :) I remember learning phonics and impressing my teachers when I began school. Now, Ms. May as we called her, was a tough lady but she was thorough and compassionate. I have chosen the career path of teaching and I feel that it is truly my calling. Had I not had a solid foundation in my education, I would have been limited in my opportunities. I feel honored and blessed to be able to pass along the principles of learning that were given to me by some of my most wonderful teachers. Mrs. Byrd was one of those people. May God comfort the family in their time of sorrow. Please know that her legacy lives on through you all as well as her students.

Dear Family,
The essence of Mrs. May Byrd will always be in the midst of all those she touched. Her kindness and love for teaching children inspired many future leaders to excel. I thank God for allowing her to touch the life of my grandchild (Ayiana). Yes, she will be missed, but a part of her lives on through the children (young and old). Thanks for encouraging all of us to learn all that we can, while we can. Family, weeping my endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.

December 20, 2012

Just learned the sad news on the passing of my preschool teacher, Ms. May Byrd. I attended her school during the first years of its development when it was in her home and through the years eventually built it into Warwick Kids Academy. Some of my earliest memories are times spent in her care. She saw an academic spark in me at an early age and nurtured it. But, I was not the only one. By teaching me to read and write, Ms. Byrd opened the door to the world.

May she rest in splendid peace

To Ed and family, l pray your faith in God will sustain the family today, a time of sadness and tears. For tomorrow, I pray the life of your beloved May become treasured memories of her loving, caring and giving life to you, to family, and to her "children." She is admired by me and many others for her good works.

To the Byrd Family

I join with so many others who knew Ms. May in offering our deepest sympathy on her passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in her passing you can celebrate the end of a productive life. She was truly a blessing to our community as an educator.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on her loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that hers indeed was a life well-lived.

May you find peace and comfort in knowing that her loss is felt by all who knew and loved her.

In Sympathy,

LaTarsha, Jimmie, Jimmie (Tre') and Jordan Wideman

Kevin, I am sadden to hear of the loss of your mother. One of my fondest memories of her, especially this time of the year, was when she would put on the Christmas plays, along with your Aunt, Mrs. Haltiwanger and the students of Warwick Kids Academy. I also spoke with her many times, when I was the Assistant Director at Zion Baptist Childcare Center. She was always willing to assist and give professional advice when needed. Please take comfort in knowing she touch many lives as a Childcare Director and as a professional educator. She will be truly missed but never forgotten for all her acts of kindness.
