NEWPORT NEWS - Melba D. Graveley, 62, passed away at Mary Immaculate Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008.
A lifelong Peninsula resident, she retired from Northrop Grumman after 32 years of service. She was a member of Langley Christian Church, Warwick Moose Lodge, Women's Auxiliary Coast Guard and Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a baker at Reservoir Middle School in Newport News.
Mrs. Graveley was preceded in death by her husband, Carl William Graveley Jr., her parents and three brothers.
Survivors include her son, Larry J. Wood Jr. and wife, Carole, of Newport News; sister, Ann D. Seawell and husband, Charles, of Yorktown; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Alecia Guillette.
There will be an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. tonight at Peninsula Funeral Home with family visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Langley Christian Church, officiated by Pastor Matt Scott. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
Arrangements will be handled by Peninsula Funeral Home.

Now that mom has wings she is everywhere and with you always.Don't ever feel alone and if you experiance what I have you will understand.Melba thank you for the memories,thank you for being the santa with gifts that my kids experienced,they will never forget.When my youngest was born YOU were the first( and jimster) to come over and see her at home and you even came with a gift.I know you wanted to steal my baby.We will always remember you,and one word that does come to mine when we think of you is"baby".I can remember you using that word in any sentence 25 years ago and I can hear you saying it tomorrow.We LOVE you forever!

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Melba...she was my neighbor and my friend at N.N.H.S. and she was one of the sweetest people I think I ever knew....may it bring her family comfort to know that so many people were touched by Melba. melba was a step-grandmother to me and my brother and sister. i didnt realy know much of her and i really never spent time or anything with her but she was still family. she was a person that ment much to jimmy and to everyone else in newport news, but she was too young to die. best of wishes for anyone who knew her long enough to be touched alot.

I remember Melba back when my mother Darlene, stepfather Billy Byrum, and Melba Would take me to their square dancing get to gethers.Melba was one of a kind.To all the family my deepest sympothy, and everyone will be in my prayers.

As time goes on and it does; our friends and family are leaving us one by one. I like to think that they are getting our Heavenly home ready for our grand reunion. We are sad to see our friends leave but we should really be glad for them.No more pain, no more heartache. Melba will be missed greatly by us all!!
