Mr. Yeapanis was a well known and highly regarded local restaurateur in Newport News. His Central Restaurant, located on Washington Avenue from 1951 until 1986, fed many who worked in the Newport News shipyard and the judicial and financial districts of the city. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Newport News, Mike was recognized as Steward of the Year in 2002. Additionally, he was a 50-plus year member of the Woodrow Wilson Chapter of the Order of AHEPA, and he was recognized for his meritorious service to the organization in 2004. Mike was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Catherine Yeapanis of Newport News; his daughter, Demetra Yeapanis Kontos, and her husband, Dr. Christopher D. Kontos, and their two sons, Michael Hermes Kontos and Alexander Apostolos Kontos, all of Durham, N.C.; his sister, Katina Hadjitheodosiou, of Limassol, Cyprus, and many nieces and nephews throughout the world. A Trisagion Prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 60 Traverse Road, Newport News. Family will receive friends until 8 p.m. at the church. I am so sorry to learn of the death of Mike C. Yeapanis. He was a kind, gentle man and everyone who knew him really liked him. I remember the days of Central Restaurant on Washington Ave. It was my favorite place to eat for so many years....and then I went to the new location. My prayers and sympathy are with the entire family. I will miss seeing him at the Greek Festival each year.

Kathy:

I am truly sorry to hear about Mike's passing.

You and Mike took my father under your wings when he came down here from Baltimore over 40 years ago. Both of my parent liked you and Mike. They tried to come by every chance they could to see both of you. When I started working at Bank of Virginia there on Washington Ave my lunches were eaten with you all.

Kathy, if there is anything I can do please give me a call.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. When I worked at Sammy's Grille I enjoyed getting to know him as he steadily patted out burgers. What a nice man with a twinkle in his eye. I am so sorry for your loss.
