Mildred Ribble Obituary

NORFOLK - Mildred "Millie" Custis Burcher Ribble, 89, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2002. She was a native of York County but had lived in Norfolk since 1929. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Edward A. "Ned" Ribble. She had been co-owner and operator of the Little Creek Sand and Gravel Company for many years. Millie was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Norfolk, where she served in various capacities through the years. She was a graduate of Morrison High School, Newport News, in 1929, and then graduated from Norfolk Business College. Survivors include her brother, Manning Burcher and his wife, Ann Lee, of Virginia Beach; sisters, Carolyn Brooks and Neva Brooks, both of Grafton, Va.; four nieces and nephews; a great-niece and a great-nephew; and a great-great-nephew. Also longtime family friend, George Elliott, who had worked for the Ribble's for many years and loving caregivers, Verdell Dean and Bettie Hayes. She was preceded in death by her brother, Cosby Burcher. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, by Rev. Richard Bridgford. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 1530 Lafayette Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23509. Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, is in charge of the arrangements.
