I am sorry for your loss. I did not know Patrick, but I am related to a man who knew his wife's father, Guy Layman, very well. A Civil War Veteran by the name of John Furner, who is my second great-grandfather. My understanding is that Guy and John were very close in Salem/Clarksburg, WV. Guy wrote about John. I would like to learn more about Guy Layman if there is anyone who is familiar with him. Again, sorry for your loss.

Dear Patrick and Family,
I did not know your father but have fond memories of your mother, Rosemary, and of all of you children from days long ago. Your dad was obviously a brilliant and talented man and loved deeply by his family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

A Former Student

God Bless You Mr. Gainer . May your family be comforted by memories of your beautiful oboe playing, your quick wit and your kindness . You accepted me as a student many, many years ago under the strict criteria that I audition for and be accepted into the Peninsula Youth Orchestra . You wanted and demanded perfection from your students. Thank you for such excellent lessons in playing, but also dedication , commitment and the honor of studying under one of the greatest oboe players on the Peninsula. Heaven has gained another superb musician, however Mr. Gainer is very special.....he's an oboist ! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Though I did not know your father well, I can remember that he was a great photographer and recall that he had a dark room in the house in Newport News. I think he may have been the photographer of a wonderful black and white photo of a cat in a windowsill that I remember well. Maybe it was that very old cat, Matilda. It makes me cry to think of how much you all must miss him. I will pray for your healing and comfort.
Sincerely, Vickie Smith
