Phillip LIPSCOMB Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Phillip Owens Lipscomb, 69, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010.
Phillip was born In Halifax, Va., on March 1, 1941, and moved to Newport News in 2004.
He attended Halifax Virginia Public Schools and upon graduation he moved to Montclair, N.J., where he met and married Joyce Riddick-Lipscomb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Owens Lipscomb Sr. and Fannie Oliver Lipscomb, both of Halifax, Va.; and his sister, Ruth and his brother, Ron.
While living in New Jersey, Phillip worked for Enron Inc. and part-time as a cab driver in both New Jersey and New York. After he and Joyce retired, they relocated to Newport News, Va., where he worked at Mary Immaculate Hospital as a security guard and LB and B Janitorial services in Yorktown, Va.
Phillip loved his beautiful fish tanks and playing checkers. He loved tinkering around the house and trying his hand at a little carpentry and mechanical work. A joy in his life was playing checkers with his niece, Khalia. It was during this time, they lovingly gave each other the name 'CROOK' because they both said the other one cheated. He would also spend hours on the phone talking with his niece, Cindy and his cousin, Francis.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 35 years, Joyce Riddick Lipscomb; his niece, Cindy Lipscomb, of Newfoundland, N.J.; his sisters-in-law, Mavis Dixon (Russel), of Newport News, Va., Norma Copland (Allister), of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; his brother-in-law, Winston Riddick, of Newport News, Va.; a special friend, Mr. Joe, of New Jersey; his cousin, Francis Owens, of Halifax, Va.; and a host of other loving family and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, in Colossian Baptist Church, 865 Old Fort Eustis Boulevard, Newport News, Va., with the Rev. Peter A. Evans officiating. Mr. Lipscomb may be viewed in the church only beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, until the hour of his service.

Joyce,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of sorrow. May you find as you reach out your hand to God that he wraps you in his arms and takes your grief from you.May you find comfort in your memories of all the laughter and love that you have shared over the years. This has meant a lot to me over the years so I am passing it forward to you.
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free

Miss me a little - but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me - but let me go
For this is a journey that we must all take
And each must go alone
It's all a part of the Master's plan
A step on the road to home

When you are lonely, and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me - but let me go
Again you are in my thougts and prayers.

Joyce and family - I am so sorry for your loss. Mavis shared stories about her beloved brother-in-law Phillip with me. I feel as if I knew him. May your happy memories of laughter and love, and knowing others care, help to sustain you.

Joyce, God bless you and the family as you grieve the death of your husband. There are no words that we can say to you that will ease the pain that you feel when a loved one dies. Keep your hand in God's hand and your eyes fixed on His face. He will get you through this. You have our love and that of our family. (Ted and Berta)
