Lt. Dick Haughton was my first partner after being assigned to the NNPD Detective Bureau. He was a fine man, gentleman and a cops cop. Lt. Haughton had a lot of influence on new detectives and was a mentor.
God bless his family and RIP Brother.

I love you grandpa and miss you so much. I miss seeing you and grandma. My heart breaks when I think about how much I miss you, grandma, uncle Bill and aunt Nanette. I know you all are in heaven watching over us. I can't wait to see you all again.

Thinking about and missing the best father in the world.
Sgt. Jim Curtis, Hampton police department

Uncle Dick was like a father to me. He was a man's man and I always tried to be like him. I never knew a more courageous man in my life. Some of my favorite memories are of Uncle Dick and I coaching Billy's baseball team. They don't make men like uncle Dick anymore. I love him and am comforted to know he is with Aunt Jeanette and Billy walking with Jesus. End of Watch Uncle Dick. Job well done.

I am very said to hear that a special person like Mr. Haughton has been taken away. May the family find peace and love in comfort I this time.
Mr. Haughton would greet me at the door of Denbigh Christian Church on Sunday morning and tell me how nice it was to see me. I enjoyed seeing his smiling face when I entered the building. The Lord has gained a new smile in his Kingdom.

Everything said in this obituary is very true and that is very rare. Dick really did live that way, always smiling, always true to his word, always looking out for someone else, even though he had more than enough of his own problems to deal with and no one would have blamed him if he was cranky. But he wasn't. He always tried to laugh and let others laugh with him.
I was very sad to hear he passed. My family did his taxes for almost 60 years. He told me stories about flying pigeons with my great grand father, who died before I was born. In the relatively short time I knew the man, I respected and admired him very much. He was a genuinely good person. You don't meet many people you can say that about, but he was one. My heart goes out to Crystal and the rest of the family. I am very sorry he is gone and will miss his smile and his laughter greatly.

LT Haughton was always one of my favorites at NNPD. The comments in his obituary reign true to his character. Although I'm traveling and will not be available to join his friends and family during his homecoming services, you will all remain in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

As a retired Newport News Police, I can say, Lt. Haughton was a nice and kind man. When I was notified that he had passed, my first response to the caller was, Lt. Haughton was a nice man. The caller responded said, "that's what I'm hearing. To his family, I extend my sympathy.

We love you so much grandpa. There will never be anyone else like you. You were always thinking of others first making sure they were taken care of. You are the most loving person. You are the true example of how Jesus wanted us to live each day by being caring, loving, kind, and always willing to help others. I know you are with grandma in heaven, and knowing I will see you again is what helps at this difficult time. We miss you and love you so much.

My heart feels broken. The greatest earthly man I have ever known was taken home to be with Jesus. The man who held me tight when I was scared ,taught me to Love with my whole heart, laugh rather than cry, be kind, respectful, honest ,generous and most importantly to always Trust God. I Love You Dad and will see you in Heaven.

Our family is no longer whole after the loss of our parents (Our mother passed away last December and my father wanted nothing but to have his loving wife back. They're in Heaven together now along with our brother and their son, Richard Haughton IV -"Billy".
What a glorious day, when we meet on that beautiful shore!

He was a wonderful man. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers. I always enjoyed coming over to play as a kid. Even though I was his cousin, he treated me like one of his own children. If any of you need anything, please let me know.
