Robert BEGLAND Obituary

SMITHFIELD - Robert Roy "Bob" Begland, 66 died at home in Smithfield, Va., on Sunday, April 1, 2012, from complications associated with the treatment of throat cancer.
Bob was born in February 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the only child to Rob Roy and Zelda Conner Begland. He graduated from Columbus' St. Charles Preparatory School in 1964 and the Ohio State University in 1969.
He married Judy Ann Dixon, an Ohio State classmate, in Columbus in 1967.
Upon graduation from Ohio State, Bob was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He qualified as a Ranger and expert in jungle warfare, before leaving to lead an infantry platoon in Vietnam. He earned a Combat Infantry Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster for his actions in combat and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in battle that almost took his life. In the years following the war, he commanded a company and returned to the Army's infantry officer course, where he taught incoming lieutenants. He also earned a Masters in Education (Wayne State University) and a Doctorate in Education (Florida State University). During this time, he began writing articles in prominent military journals outlining new methods for selecting and training officers and soldiers. Later assignments took him and his family to Germany and to England, where he was an exchange officer to the British Army. Hampton Roads eventually became a home after two tours at Fort Monroe's Training and Doctrine Command (1977-1979, 1983-87). His final assignment was at Old Dominion University, as the Professor of Military Science and Battalion Commander. During that last tour, he also oversaw the assessment and selection of all ROTC cadets on the east coast. He retired from the military in 1991 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After retirement from the military, Bob spent fifteen years as an executive coach and leadership consultant for organizations and individuals in Hampton Roads. At the same time, with his wife and daughter, he opened Wharf Hill Antiques in Smithfield, Va.
In life, he had a passion for golf, the outdoors, his dogs, and above all else, his family. As a Boy Scout Master, soccer coach and PTA president he always put the life and development of his three children first. He spent many weekends in the Virginia mountains backpacking and camping with his family. He also spent much of his time on buying trips throughout the mid-Atlantic buying antiques for Wharf Hill.
Learning was a life long pursuit, and many students, soldiers and managers benefited from his passion for leadership.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy Ann Dixon; three children and three grandchildren, his eldest son, Robert Roy Jr., and his wife, Kelly Ryan, and their son, Hugh Raymond, of Los Angeles, Calif.; a second son, Michael Thorne-Begland and his husband, Tracy Thorne-Begland; and their children, Chance Dixon and Logan Ann, in Richmond, Va.; and a daughter, Christina and her husband, Doug Shisler, in Smithfield, Va.
A service celebrating Bob's life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Chapel of the Centurion, Fort Monroe, Va. The family will welcome guests immediately following the service at the Chamberlin, also on Fort Monroe.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Isle of Wight Relay For Life, c/o Pam Jordan, 18214 Farmview Lane, Windsor, VA 23487.
Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, Va. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Bob and Judy were special friends that I lost along Life's path! Their lives affected mine in ways they never knew, but in the most positive way. Bob's military professionalism inspired me to excell in the Army and his sense of humor played a direct roll in the approach I took in all of my assignments.
I just learned of his passing and on this Memorial Day felt the need to recognize his impact on my Life. Rest In Peace, Bob, wish we had shared more years on this side.

I came across the sad news of Bob's passing whilst looking up people I had worked with at the Army School of Training Support at Beaconsfield, Bucks, England. I had a year's placement there in 1981/82, between my second and third years at university and Bob gave me the opportunity to get involved in a study about armoured fighting vehicle recognition. He was a great mentor and lots of fun to work with. The ASTS wasn't the same after his return to the USA.
My condolences to Bob's family, of whom I heard him talk often.

Bob was a friend of mine in high school and a fraternity brother in college. He apparently accomplished much in his life. I am sorry to hear of his death.

I first met Col. Begland many years ago within the first few days of Wharf Hill opening its doors for business. My first of what would eventually be many purchases from the shop was a pair of Victorian shoes - new old stock that had been found among the inventory of a long-closed Smithfield department store. He had hand-polished them himself and they were spectacular. I still love them and think of him every time I see them. Such a kind, gentle and thoughtful man - I had no idea of his distinguished background until I read of his passing. My sincere sympathies are extended to Judy and family. In the days to come, I hope that memories of joyful times spent in his company will be a never-ending blessing.

On behalf of the OSU Army ROTC Alumni Society, heartfelt condolences go to the family of Bob Begland. His life of service to this country and love for his family were apparent in his obituary, and I regret not having known him personally. His accomplishments will be made known to the Society and shared as an example to the great ROTC cadets in the OSU program of which he was an alumnus.

Dear Judy and Family,

I was saddened by reading of Bob's passing. I only met him a couple of times at the Lost Chord Club Meetings but he left a lasting impression on us all. He always asked about me when he saw my son, Mike, at the Farm Fresh Pharmacy and my son would always tell me how he was doing. It is most difficult to hear of one of our cancer fighters being lost but he will never be forgotten. You and your family are in our prayers.

Dear Judy and Family,

I was shocked and saddened to read of Bob's death. I remember him as a kind and delightful person. The last time I saw him was at our St. Mary's 40th class reunion and I remember thinking that he looked just like he did way back in the 60's. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers,

Sorry for your loss of a really "Good Guy".
Wanted you all to know he was not forgotten and was also a "Really Good Kid/Friend" too. We grew up together, from 1956 till losing contact around 1964. Always wondered where he went from there, now I know. He did a great amount of good.
I remember we somehow got "Rob Roy's old Kaiser running (R.R. didn't know)and we drove around trying to learn to drive a stickshift, the 'rastlin' ring his dad put in the backyard for him and the visiting 'pros'. And I sure. couldn't forget Mrs.Zelda Begland either.
"BOBBY" was one of the most memorable and likeable of the Ontario Street Kids,in Columbus Oh., along with Mary B., Fritz B., R&B K, Donna W., WC L., Georgette G., Sherry D., Ed.P., Joyce R. and Eu'gene' L...
(Should any of "Bobbys" & my Kid Friends read this, drop a line, [email protected] about you all too.)

Judy and family:
I met Bob in September of 1960 - he and I were in homeroom 303 at St Charles Preparatory School in Columbus. Both sat by the window; they had put us in alphabetic order - Bob was first, I was last in the row (Begland -then Cody). Although I transferred to Bishop Watterson High School, I never forgot Bob, his kindness, friendliness, concern; in short, he was a stand-up guy, well liked and respected by me and his classmates. I lost contact with Bob, but renewed acquaintance with him at the time of his father's death; I officiated at his father's funeral service. We renewed old acquaintances, and I was amazed at how little he had changed over the years. He told me some of his experience in the military which impressed me - Bob was never one to toot his own horn, but his description of what happened increased my respect for him. I'll never forget his calm, pleasant, friendly manner, or his winning smile and very blue eyes! I came upon his obituary in the Columbus Dispatch on this Holy Thursday, and want to add my appreciation for Bob and his life, as well as offer my prayers for the consolation of you and your family. May Bob rest in peace and know the joy of God forever.

Judy and family. Although it's been many years since Bob and I shared an office at TRADOC, I remember fondly his energy for his work, his unsatiable quest for knowledge and his well-reasoned arguments/discussions. He is a credit to the profession of arms and to the educational community. He will be sorely missed.
