HAMPTON - Ruth Wallace Mitchell, age 84, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2012.
She was born in Charlottesville, Va., on May 25, 1927, and was a longtime resident, since 1966, of Hampton, Va. Ruth was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, since 1974, where she sang in the choir for many years and was on a number of committees. Her Sunday school class was the Joyful Gleaners. She graduated from Newport News High School, in 1945, and attended junior college in Bryn Mawr, in Pennsylvania, for two years. Ruth was an avid bowler and golfer. She retired from Langley Air Force Base as the Wing Historian for the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing in May 25 1982.
Preceding her in rest are her parents, Rufus Wallace and Mary Lillian Shipp Mitchell; sisters, Hazel M. Brogan and Juanita M. Granger; and nephew, M. Hawthorne Granger III.
Surviving members of her family include her nephews, Tom Brogan and wife, Mary Jean, Robert Granger and wife, Cynthia; nieces, Marcia McQuitty and husband, David, Rita Hitchler and husband, Mike; many grand-nieces and nephews; and Marvine H. Windle, best friend.

Memorial donations may be made, in Ruth's name, to Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton, Va.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a service remembering Ruth's life will be held at 11 a.m., in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
