Ruth Bedsaul Reece
NEWPORT NEWS - Ruth Bedsaul Reece, 72, went to her Heavenly Father after a long illness, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002. Ruth was a longtime resident of Newport News, but was born in Pilot Mount, N.C. Her family then moved to Woodlawn, Va. She worked as a bank teller for Central Fidelity Bank and as a professional cosmetologist at Rices-Nachmans and Thalhiemer's on Warwick Blvd. where she earned many certificates and awards. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with her husband, Bill, side by side for many years taking care of multiple churches. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints since 1954, she and her husband Bill were sealed together for "time and all eternity" in 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was an active member of the Church and served in many positions in the Primary organization as well as the Young Women's organization. She was a beautiful, spiritual lady who loved flowers and seemed to have that touch that could bring life even to the most lifeless flower or plant. She loved her birds and fed them religiously for 42 years. She nursed many birds back to health that had been injured or struck by lightning. She loved and nurtured her dogs, which she owned over the years, many of them previously mistreated animals. She brought out the love in all of them. Her dog Tava will miss her. She loved nature in general and instilled that love in her children. She loved camping with her family and created many wonderful memories with them. She supported her husband in scouting by serving as a den mother for many years and helped Bill with every aspect of his scouting career as a scoutmaster for Troop 58. She mothered many children other than her own. Her culinary talents were legendary and many of her family members and others fought over her Pineapple Coconut Cake at family reunions. She loved and nurtured everyone and everything that was within the blessed realm of her touch. She will be remembered by friends too numerous to mention here. Left to treasure her many loving memories are her husband of 54 years, William A. "Bill" Reece Jr.; her daughter, Ruth Ann Horace, and husband, Harry, of LeCanto, Fla.; her son, William D. Reece Sr., and wife, Vicky, of Pocatello, Idaho; and her daughter, Kathy Burke, and husband, Charlie, of Hampton. She is also remembered lovingly by her brothers, Odell Bedsaul, Richard Bedsaul, and sister, Iva Jensen. Also missing their loving grandmother are her 14 grandchildren, Jon Horace, Sheri Jemmott, Amy Sanders, Sandy and Kimberly Horace, William D. "Billy" Reece Jr., Dax and Cole Jacobson, Danny, David, and Amanda Burke, Dale, Matthew and Jesse Reece; and her four great-grandchildren, Jayna and Aurora Sanders and Garrett and Ainsley Reece. She was preceded in death by her son, Garland D. Reece; her brothers, Garland Bedsaul, Roy Bedsaul; and sister, Mary Spickard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1510 Todds Lane, Hampton, Va. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. After the service the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
