Sidney Dixon Obituary

Sidney Cheavens Dixon, age 90, of Gloucester Point, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 15, 2023. Sid was born on May 21, 1933, in Durant, Oklahoma, to Fred and Dorothy Cheavens Dixon. Sid and his high school sweetheart Marion Owen were married for 68 years. Sid achieved bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Virginia. Immediately after college Sid served in the US Navy as a warrant officer and subsequently worked as a mechanical engineer at NASA Langley Research Center, during this time, he completed a Ph.D. at Virginia Tech, served as branch director, and later as division chief. Sid was a long-time resident of Gloucester County. He was active in the community and spent countless hours serving others. Sid served the citizens of Gloucester County in many ways. As a member of Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad, he served in several positions, including president. His most cherished legacy with the rescue squad was obtaining funding from Gloucester County to start Advanced Life Support EMS services. Sid served for several years on the Planning Commission and Community Services Board. He was also an election officer for many years. Sid, well-read in history and religion, was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities from Sunday school teacher to treasurer. Sid served on the church advisory board and supervised the Gloucester Point Cemetery. Sid was a founding member of the Samaritan Group, which provides temporary assistance to Gloucester County families in need, and he was also a founding member of the Gloucester Housing Partnership. Sidney Cheavens Dixon is survived by his wife, Marion Owen Dixon, children Beth Dixon, David Dixon (Donna), Susan Hutchinson (Brian), and grandchild Andrew Hutchinson. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hogg Funeral Home (3098 George Washington Memorial Hwy, Hayes, VA 23072). The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Paul Song and Reverend Braxton Allport, will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Bethany United Methodist Church (1860 Hayes Rd, Gloucester Point, VA 23062). Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A reception will take place at the church following the services. The Dixon family would like to thank all the caregivers, family members, and family friends who did so much for Sid over the years. Your commitment to help, professional care, kindness, and understanding was a blessing. In memory of Sid, the family asks that you donate to a local charity of your choice. God Bless! As a friend and high school classmate of Beth, David, and Susan I viewed Sid as an ideal parent. As I became an adult I saw Sid as a wise and sincere optimist. He will be missed.
