William Marshall Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mr. William E. Marshall Sr., 83, departed this life on March 27, 2006, to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a devoted member and Trustee of Union Baptist Church, where he was active in the Male Chorus, Mass Choir, Sunday and Bible Schools and Youth Mentorship. Mr. Marshall was born in New Bern, N.C., on Oct. 28, 1922, to the late William H. and Sarah M. Marshall. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received numerous awards. He graduated from North Carolina A&T University in 1950 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding Class 688 Engineering Department with 36 years of service. He was Vice President of the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR) Local 8888, a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 21 AF & AM, Scottish Rite, The American Legion and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by his wife, Wilhelmina Marie Marshall; one brother; four sisters; and a son-in-law. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Judy M. Fulton of Richmond, Va., and Jenniffer Harrelson (James) of Newport News, Va.; one son, William E. Marshall Jr. (Darlene) of Newport News, Va.; seven grandchildren, Robert F. Hopson Jr. (Angela), Sarada L. Fulton, James A. Harrelson, Jayson M. Harrelson, Sierra L. Fulton, William E. Marshall III and Angela M. Marshall; six great-grandchildren, Robert M. Hopson, Traevor Hopson, Shilaiah N. Fulton, Angela Hopson, Xzavia Fulton and Jasmine Ward; niece, Elizabeth Hazelton, and nephew, Hamp Hazelton of New Jersey; a special devoted friend, Deacon Nathaniel Carlton; numerous cousins, friends, neighbors, and Pastor Mims and the Union Baptist Church Family. A special thanks to all doctors and nurses who provided care for our father. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the funeral home. A homegoing celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Union Baptist Church, 361 Maple Ave., Newport News, VA 23607. The Marshall family is receiving services of comfort at Nicholson-Cummings Funeral Home, 4304 Victoria Blvd., Hampton. (757) 728-0122.

I was sorry to hear of the passing of cousin William Earl. I did not find out until late Friday night. I will always remember his laugh and how much fun he was to be around.
