NEWPORT NEWS - William John Ross Jr., "WJ" of Newport News, passed away at the age of 89, on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, peacefully in his home after a lengthy illness.
He was a native of Valdosta, Ga., and a resident of Newport News for 70 years, graduating from Newport News High School. "WJ" was a WW II veteran, having served our country in the U.S. Army. He retired from C&P Telephone Company, as a central office repairman, after 34 years of service. Mr. Ross was a member of Newport News Church of Christ, belonged to the telephone company Pioneers, and was a proud member of the NRA.
Emily H. Ross, his best friend and beloved wife of 61years, preceded him in death in 2009.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Patty Hubbard; son, Donald Ross; four grandchildren, Michael David Hubbard, Heather Privette, James Michael Ross, Erin Lewis; eight great-grandchildren, Kayla Walker, Taylor Terrill, Brandon Ross, Tristen Privette, Jacob Mills, Layla Privette, Harper Kelly Hubbard , Michael Camden Hubbard; nephew, Clarence D. Hancock III; and many nieces and nephews in Georgia.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Peninsula Memorial Park, with the Rev.
