William SIPE Obituary

CHARLOTTESVILLE - William Henry Sipe, M.D., 83, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.
Born in Harrisonburg, Va., on April 29, 1927, Dr. Sipe was the son of the late William Edgar and Edith Minerva Rothgeb Sipe. He resided in Newport News, Va., for 31 years and in Albemarle County for the past 19 years.
Dr. Sipe graduated from the University of Virginia in 1948, and received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1951. Following graduation from medical school, his specialty training in urology was at St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, Ill., Tulane University Charity Hospital, New Orleans, La., and the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Va. His specialty training was interrupted for two years while he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Dr. Sipe practiced urology for three years in Roanoke, Va., and 31 years in Newport News, Va., where he retired as President of the Hampton Roads Urology Clinic, Inc. In 1991, he moved to Albemarle County, where he became an Associate Professor of Clinical Urology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine for 13 years. His contact with the students, residents and fellows was a rewarding and enjoyable experience for which he was grateful. In 2004, Dr. Sipe retired after 47 years in the field of urology.
Dr. Sipe was associated with and a board member of multiple medical, urological and community societies, serving as an officer in many. He has loved the University of Virginia, where he was a Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Pi, Lambda Pi, Varsity Football ('45, '46), "V" Club, and a member of the Raven Society. He served on the Alumni Association Board of Managers ('72 – '78), and on the Athletic Council ('78 – '80). In 2010, he was inducted into the Harrisonburg High School Sports Hall of Fame. He always found joy in reading, following sports, and the company of his children and grandchildren, as well as tennis and croquet.
He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann Yancey; his daughter, Elisabeth Susan Sipe; and his brother, James Rothgeb Sipe.
Dr. Sipe is survived by three children, William Henry Sipe III and his wife, Stephanie Hudgins, of Rock Hill, S.C., Mary Hedley Sipe of Richmond, Va., and Charles Yancey Sipe and his wife, Cameron Carter Clark, of Charlottesville, Va.; seven grandchildren, William Henry Sipe IV, Charles Yancey Sipe Jr., Edie Garland Bethke, William Harrison Burton, Landon Clark Sipe, Ann Carter Sipe and Chloe Elisabeth Sipe.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at St. Paul's Ivy Episcopal Church, Charlottesville, Va., officiated by the Rev. Jane Sigloh. A reception will follow at The Boar's Head Inn, Charlottesville, Va. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to University of Virginia Miller Center of Public Affairs, P.O. Box 400406, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4406, or to a charity of choice.

I am so sorry to read here of Will's death. He was first cousin to my father, Paul Thrasher (1920- 2002), who was the son of Penelope (Nell) Catherine Sipe Thrasher. Will, James, and their cousin Robert were the closest my father had to brothers, and he spoke of them often. I remember Lisa when we were both little girls, and was sad to hear of her death years ago.

I came online looking for an address so that I could tell Will that my mother, Vesta Cassedy Thrasher, died, just a few weeks after Will, on January 23 of this year, at home in Bethesda MD, with me at her bedside.

We are second cousins -- please feel free to contact me here or on Facebook, where my brothers Paul and Larry also have pages.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Dr. William H. Sipe. Will, you were a gentleman and a scholar. Our children attended Hidenwood Elementary School. Two of the girls loved horses. You were a friend both professionally and personally. My Blessings to you all with much respect and love,

Dear Hedley~~, Hank, and Charles,

I was so sorry to hear of your father's death. I will always remember him with great fondness. He was so good to put up with me on many football weekends while I was at UVA. He lived a grand life and he has left behind a beautiful legacy, especially the wonderful family he has left to miss him. I'll be thinking of all of you. Love-Megan

My sincere condolences to Dr. Sipes family. I worked with Dr. Sipe in the Urology Dept at UVA and was very fortunate to be on the receiving end of much of his knowledge. He not only was a teacher to me, but gave me advice and pointers on parenting and never failed to inquire about my son. He was a wonderful person and I'm so saddened to hear of his passing.

My sincere condolences to the family. I worked with Dr. Sipe many years ago when he volunteered seeing patients at a free outpatient clinic in Newport News. He helped many people and they were grateful for his service. I hope your heavy hearts lighten soon.
