William L. SPENCER
NEWPORT NEWS - William Leslie Spencer, 76, a lifelong Peninsula resident passed away Friday, May 4, 2012, surrounded by his family.
He graduated from Newport News High School, with the class of 1953, and was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1956. He worked for the C&P Telephone Co., for 32 years. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, a football coach with the Sanford Pee-Wee Football program, Boy Scouts of America Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 6 and a previous member of the Elks Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Eunice Spencer; as well as his brother, Donald "Donnie" Spencer; and his sister, Janet Verrell.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Judy Spencer; his children, Greg Spencer, of Virginia Beach, Va., Sharon Stilwell, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Dana Cooper, of Harrisburg, Pa., and Leslie Youngblood, of Galveston, Texas; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Peninsula Memorial Park by Michael Simone, the Senior Pastor of Spring Branch Community Church of Virginia Beach.

My deepest sympathy to the Spencer Family. I had many conversations with Billy at the Roost, he was entertaining, intelligent, and a gentleman. One of my fav's at the round table.

Judy, Sharon, And Greg,
Billy was a man in his own and I have known him for 38Yrs and introduced my sister to him. Billy is in a better place than any of us know, but a great loss on our daily feelings. God Bless You all

I never walked into the Spencer house without a big ol' "hey Matchoo" from Mr Spence. I loved him dearly and will be eternally grateful for his love and guidance. Greg and Sharon, love u both and my heart goes out to you. I am sorry I cant be there with you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill's Family. Bill was an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 6 in Denbigh when our son Kyle joined the Troop. We believe that Bill and the other Scoutmasters and Scouting in General helped develop Kyle into the Man he is today, We will be forever greatful to Bill and the Troop.
