I am sorry to hear that Bill has passed on. We have been communicating with each other since 1998. I really liked Bill a lot. He was a good friend to educators and will be missed. I got to know him when I attended the NASA NEW program in 1998 at NASA Langley Research Center in VA. I will keep all of you in my prayers. I will also try to pass this on to other NASA New Educators.

Dear Williams Family,

I spent less than a week around Bill at Langley for an educator's conference. The first day of the conference, he showed the book ZOOM, by Istvan Banyai to the group. Seeing Bill turn the pages and ask us our thoughts is how I will remember him. I knew from the moment I first talked to him that he is the kind of person you want to know and be. I will keep ZOOM at my desk and think of Bill.

Karen and Family:
I work with Peggy and I feel that I knew Billy through her. When I saw his picture, I thought to myself, "that's him alright". His smile and that little twinkle in his eyes gave him away. Peggy often spoke of her love for him and all of you. He was highly revered.
May God continue to bless you, comfort you, and keep you stayed in his peace beyond all understanding.

Karen and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Bill. I am sure with as many people that Bill brought into your home (and Karen, you so graciously accepted with open arms) that you won't remember me but both of you have a special place in my heart. I was blessed to go through the NASA NEW program twice, visit in your home, go to church with you, by a necklace that your daughter hand-made and go to the military base for a 4th of July concert with you (Bill cut his hand that night but I don't remember how). The impression you and Bill made on my life will never be forgotten. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

To Dr. Bill’s family:
I was stunned to hear that Dr. Bill had passed. We had talked just a few weeks ago and I was looking forward to seeing him at the meeting next month. In the ten years that I knew him, he was always so encouraging and upbeat, even when dealing with traveling some twisting Kentucky backroads to visit a new school. He really got a charge out of seeing the impact the programs made on the students. A true Southern gentleman is how I have heard him described and no truer words were spoken. I will miss him and Langley just won’t be the same.

Karen and Family,
I just learned of Billy's passing. I know he will be greatly missed. I have such pleasant memories of the the difference he made while in Williamsburg. He made the entire Central Office much warmer by his presence.

To my family, and friends of Bill,

I will begin by saying that I loved Bill very much. I faced Bill as no other has, to ask him for his daughter’s hand in marriage. It was not an easy thing to do, being a father myself, I knew the skepticism I would have held, had the roles been reversed. But on that day, December 26, 2005, I sat with Bill, confessed my sins and mistakes, shared my hopes and joys, and concluded by telling him how much I loved his daughter, and what kind of life I envisioned for my wife to be. Bill was never judgmental, always supportive, and listened very carefully. At the end he hugged me, and welcomed me to his family. We then picked out the day I would ask Megan to marry me, together.

When Bill welcomed me to his family, he meant it. Since that day I have always felt like a friend, confidant, and most importantly, like a son. Bill and I shared many private conversations, though not as many as I had hoped for. He was always candid, and loving. In life men always look for their father’s approval, they want their Dad to be proud of them. I have been both burdened and blessed, knowing that I have two men who mean so much to me, indeed it is their approval and pride that I strive to earn. I will always strive to make you proud of me Bill.

In his last days, when I asked Bill what he feared, it was not death; it was what his death would cost his children and family. He wanted them to continue to love God with all their might, and not question His decision to carry Bill home. To his last, Bill was a real man, what every other man strives to be. I sat in awe of his great character, his selflessness, and his amazing faith. Bill is an example of what is good and right, how a man should carry himself, and how he should lead - by example.

On Monday, May 21, 2007, a piece of my heart died, a piece I gladly give to a man I love. I know you still watch us from above Bill. I thank you for all you have done for me, the lessons you taught me, the wisdom you gave, the good times we shared, the wine we drank together, the laughter and the tears, for your love, and most of all for that precious gift you shared with me, your wonderful daughter and your fantastic family. You will live in my heart forever, and I look forward to seeing you again, on the other side. Today I am poorer because I have lost you, and richer for having known you. I love you Bill Williams.

To all of Bill's family:
I had the privilege of knowing Bill first as a mentor, then as a colleague, but most importantly as a friend. He always looked out for me and my family and I will cherish every moment I had to spend with him. I feel so blessed that he was in my life and had a chance to know my youngest son before he passed and know by his actions and deeds here on Earth that he is reaping the rewards of his eternal life. No one will ever be able to replace him.

Karen,
I can't begin to tell you how devastated I was to hear of Billy's death. I've known Billy since second grade where we became very good friends.I played for that very talented boy soprano to sing all over NN. As you know he was like a brother to all of us in the group. He was a bright, wonderful, caring man and we will miss him terribly. I feel so lucky to have had such a wonderful friend for the last 60 years.

Lauren and Family - We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our deepest condolences are with you as you grieve.

Bill and Molly Cox

May 23, 2007

Dear Karen and family: Molly and I want to extend our deepest sympathies to you on Billy's death at this juncture in your lives. At times like these, we must accept that God has His own timetable on the lives of His people and He must have reasoned that Billy had accomplished his mission on this earth and was ready to join his loved ones in his eternal resting place in heaven.

I cherish those years that I was privileged to spend with Billy in the Instructional Department of NN Public Schools. Billy had such a charming and uplifting personality that it was impossible for any of us to start the day with burdens too great to handle. Perhaps more importantly, Billy's knowledge of instruction and his ability to inspire and teach others those skills and techniques that were essential to the education of our youth was unsurpassed in his profession. His sense of humor and his wonderful regard for all of God's people were daily reminders of this unique individual's personal gifts.

Billy will long be remembered by his friends and co-workers and Molly and I join with so many in asking the Lord's blessing on you and the rest of your family (Megan, Erin, Lauren, and Colin). Our love to you all. We will keep you in our prayers.

Dear Karen and Family,
Words cannot express how much Billy meant to us. He was a pioneer in the middle school concept and the Newport News education community. He was our mentor in teaching, our Sunday School teacher, and our friend. He was such a gentle soul and one that asked no more of someone else than he would be willing to do himself. No one knows how many lives he touched, but he will be missed and we are privledged to have known and loved him.

I had the opportunity and good fortune to have worked with Bill for ten years as the manager of the ERC for NASA LaRC. He truly was a professional educator, leader and a Virginia gentleman. He will be missed by the NASA Education community and all others who have crossed paths with him in all his education related ventures. He was a friend to me and I will remember him.

Dear Megan and Williams Family,
I was very saddened to hear of "Dad" passing on. I remember meeting him as I was forming a friendship with you. He was so friendly and approachable. I remember him coming to the rescue for the CHROME club and always willing to share the miny van for moving "stuff". What I remember the most was his genuine smile and always kind words. Please know that my prayers are with you all.

Mr. Williams was a perfect example of a loving and devoted father to his children. I appreciate being welcomed into the Williams' home whenever I was in Newport News -- we always had so much fun there when we were kids and even now. He was a wonderful, kind man and I will always have fond memories.

May 23, 2007

Karen and Family,
I worked with Billy at Jefferson Lab as well as being part of the Chestnut family with him. He was a man with a gentle heart and soul who had a passion for teaching. His knowledge of education was infinite and his devotion for sharing this knowledge was impeccable. Whenever you talked with Billy, you always left with a smile on your face and a caring feeling in your heart. This "gentle" man will definitely be missed by everyone who was touched by his wisdom, and kindness.

When I think of Bill I think of a kind and warm gentleman with a subtle sense of humor. We worked together at CEBAF and also with projects later at NASA. He always joked and called our time conducting teacher workshops together the “Bill and Barb Show”. He was a dedicated father and husband. Whenever I saw him he would share the latest news about each of his children. He was the type of man that made you feel like he was not only your colleague, but your friend as well. So many people will miss him.
