Edward Lewis "Abby" Abernathy On the morning of Friday, October 10, 2014, Abby went to be with the Lord after a five year battle with cancer; while being comforted at his side by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years. Abby was 74 years old. Abby was a lifelong resident of the City of Charlottesville and a graduate of Lane High School. He was the first child, and the only son, of Wilson and Florence Abernathy who preceded him in death along with his sister, Judith Marie Jones. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lindsay Abernathy. Additionally he is survived by his three sons, Edward Lindsay "Chip" Abernathy and wife, Katherine, William "Todd" Abernathy and Paul Wilson Abernathy and wife, Darlene. He is also affectionately remembered as "Grandpa" by his many grandchildren, Trent, Zachary, Tanner, Lindsay, Lily, Kimberly, and Scott; and his great-grandchild Braylon. Abby loved people, coaching and mentoring his son's and others in baseball or softball, and enjoyed one of his greatest passions, coaching and playing Fast-Pitch Softball for over 45 years. Many fathers don't get to experience the joy of playing ball with their sons quite like he did, some of our families greatest memories are of Abby and his three boys playing softball together on the same ball field. But more importantly he loved his family and his devoted friends. While in the automobile industry and coaching/playing softball, Abby made many friends who will miss him; the family thanks you all for your continued love and support. The Abernathy family would like to give a special thank you to lifelong and devoted friends George and Sybil Mahanes for being with the family right to the very end. The family would also like to thank his Lane High School Alumni who have kept in touch and visited with Abby over these past five years. The family will be having a private service. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the UVA Hope (Community) Cancer Care Charlottesville; 590 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 175, Charlottesville, VA 22911 in Edward Lewis "Abby" Abernathy's name.

I miss you so much Pop. It's been over a decade now since we lost you. Mom is with you now so it does comfort our loss knowing you both are together again. Thank you for being my Dad!
