Adele Fletcher Obituary

Adele Davis Woodall Fletcher "Dale" Adele Davis Woodall Fletcher "Dale" was born on March 14, 1930, in Guntersville, Alabama, to Minor E. Woodall Sr. and Adele "Della" Moss Woodall. She passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014. Dale grew up surrounded by her cousins and brothers, Minor E. Woodall "Buck" and William Clay Woodall "Hootie." Dale's young Guntersville days were spent pursuing her passions for fishing and water skiing. She spent many summers enjoying all day fishing jaunts with her dear cousin, Lallie Wallace. Dale also loved fishing and visiting with her uncle, Page Moss. Dale and Lallie also represented the town as Queens of Lake Guntersville. Dale was beloved in Guntersville for her sweet, generous personality and she won the citizenship award in her school as a young teenager. Dale excelled at academics and was eager to experience challenges outside of her small hometown. Dale attended High School at Sullins Academy in Roanoke, Virginia. She then went on to graduate from Duke University with a B.A. in Political Science in 1952. After college graduation, Dale became engaged to her brothers' childhood friend, John Caldwell Fletcher, from Birmingham, Alabama. With her typical adventuresome spirit, she moved to Georgetown and shared a brownstone with a group of friends from Duke. Dale started working for Senator John Sparkman of Alabama in his Capital Hill office in Washington, D.C., while John attended the Virginia Theological Seminary. John and Dale were married in Guntersville on September 4, 1954. John received a Fulbright scholarship and they moved to Heidelberg, Germany for two years to pursue John's study of Dietrich Bonhoffer. During their time in Germany, they got to know famed theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Dale later worked for him as a typist. Dale and John relocated to Lexington, Virginia, after John's ordination as an Episcopal priest. John assumed the jobs of Rector of Robert E. Lee Memorial Church and Chaplain of Washington & Lee University. Dale was extremely busy with her role as chaplain's wife as well as having two young sons while in Lexington. John pursued further education at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and the family lived in New York, near Harlem, for two years. After receiving his Ph.D., the family returned to Alexandria, Virginia and Dale gave birth to their daughter. While in New York and Washington, D.C., Dale and John marched in civil rights marches with Martin Luther King, Jr. Dale received numerous awards as a real estate agent for Macklin Hansen Realtors in Alexandria and was their top selling agent for many years. Dale's great joy in her real estate work was helping a young couple locate and settle into their first home. John's career culminated in teaching medical ethics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dale and John had many wonderful years in Charlottesville with their children and grandchildren visiting often. After John's death in 2004, Dale moved to Leesburg, Virginia to be near her son, Dr. Page Fletcher. The family would like to extend profound thanks and continued love to Dale's friend and caregiver, Virginia Nalls. Dale was predeceased by her mother, father, and brother, Buck. She is survived by her brother, Hootie; her sons, Caldwell Fletcher and Claire and Dr. Page Moss Fletcher and Shannon; and her daughter, Dr. Adele Fletcher Mays and Julian. She is survived by her eight grandchildren, Grace Kiely Fletcher of Austin, Texas, John Cassidy Fletcher of Austin, Texas, Denis Caldwell Fletcher of Houston, Texas, Sarah Moss Fletcher of Charlottesville, Virginia, Mary Katherine Fletcher of Hillsboro, Virginia, James Julian Mays III of Knoxville, Tennessee, John Fletcher Mays of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Jefferson Grey Mays of Knoxville, Tennessee. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the University of Virginia Medical School Foundation, The John C. Fletcher Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 800776, Charlottesville, VA 22908. Friends may sign the guestbook at teaguefuneralhome.com.

Dale was a dear friend, more than the mother of my great friend Page Moss. I trusted and respected her and retained her for the first time I bought a house which was daunting at the time and she made it so easy and fun and gave me great confidence. My thoughts are with all the Fletchers.

Dear Adele, Caldwell and Page,

Your mom was so good to us when we first got to Charlottesville, nineteen years ago. She was our realtor and found us a beautiful home, where we still live. She also showed us around the city. She was a thoughtful and charming woman. We miss her as do you.
May you be comforted in knowing that she no longer struggles with her memory. Her mind is now clear. She is at peace.

Caldwell, Page and Adele - The obituary is a wonderful description of your Mother's full, active and dedicated life. I had forgotten many of the details, but it was a pleasure for me to be reminded of what an extraordinary person she was. She had a full and rewarding life that very few of us are fortunate enough to experience, and you three children (and the grandchildren) are an integral part of what made her so wonderful.
Much love,
Woody
