Alison Montgomery Obituary

Alison Montgomery

January 16, 1944 - October 24, 2021

Alison Ruth Fry Montgomery, 77, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, October 24, 2021.

Alison was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Constance and William Fry on January 16, 1944. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1966 where she studied English and met the love of her life, Daniel Montgomery. She and Daniel married shortly after graduation and served jointly as Peace Corps Volunteers in Malaysia from 1966-1969. Following their service abroad, Alison went on to earn a Masters in Public Health from the University of Michigan, and later, a Masters of Business Administration from Penn State. She had a vibrant career in health care administration at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where Alison and Daniel moved in 1983. Throughout their marriage they poured themselves into their friendships, nature, community service, and their two daughters, Leah and Anna.

Alison was a loving and kind mother, a compassionate partner, a caring friend, a gifted gardener, and if you never got one of her homemade loaves of bread, we're sorry you missed out. She was a health nut through and through. She ate more salads than anyone we know and enjoyed swimming along the shore of Sand Lake, Michigan, horseback riding with her daughters, and walking in the company of loved ones, who had to skip to keep up with her to the very end. She will be dearly missed by so many.

Alison was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Daniel; her twin brother, Alan Fry; and her older brother, Roger Fry. She is survived by her daughters, Leah Montgomery and Anna Sullivan; her grandchildren, Tamire Sweeney and May and Eamon Sullivan; her sister, Linda Mallett; and many cherished extended family members.

A celebration of Alison's life will be held outside at her family's home, 3234 Horseshoe Bend Rd. Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please reach out to someone you've been meaning to connect with and let them know you're thinking of them. Alison would love that.

.Alison was one of my closest friends during college.I adored Alison and her wonderful family. They welcomed me in to their beautiful home and into their loving and generous family. They invited me to live in their home as Alison's roomate. Alison and I became almost like sisters. We studied together, shared our struggles and our joys. Alison was such a great listener and a generous and loving friend. I haven't seen Alison in so many years. I did have a lovely talk with her on the phone after Roger's passing. We both hoped that we could see each other again In Cincinnati one day. Alas, it did not happen! I can tell by reading the tributes submitted so far that Alison was every bit the person that I loved. I am so sad that she left this world so soon. She and her warm family were a true gift to my life.

I am so sorry to hear of your mom, Alison´s passing. Your mom and dad had an amazing impact on my life. My mother´s pain was comforted when she was struggling with cancer by an exceptional session with Daniel at health south. After he left my mom asked who that kind man was. Alison was instrumental in sorting that visit out. Shortly after Daniel died I felt him cruise through my psyche and your mom said to me that he "made the rounds" with lots of people. Your mom made a "round" with me too! She was a special human being. So strong, giving, and her energy! when she stopped for coffee at the store after yoga lessons in free union just made my day! What a beautiful woman. Your life is full because of her and your family. Their spirits live on! Much love coming your way from me.

Leah and Anna,
I´m so sorry to hear about your mom. I will always remember her opening her home to a FU preschool class and teaching them how to make vegetable soup.
Her warmth and smile will live on through your family.

Just breathe......as she & Daniel would have said....

Your FU neighbors,
Master Gardener days
ACAC rides to yoga, trips to library, store, etc.
When I saw the bookmobile returning to FU after COVID, I intended to call & encourage her access....& have driven by a million times - each one thinking I should roll in to see how she & 'Brother' cat were....
My thoughts will keep her & her great smile with us-
