Barbara Brodie Obituary

Barbara Brodie, PhD, RN, FAAN, died on Thursday, February 9, 2023, in Charlottesville, Va.

She was born on April 6, 1935 in Chicago, Ill., and was predeceased by her parents, Francis Raymond Brodie and Catherine McGovern Brodie; her sister, Denise Carr; and brother, Robert Francis Brodie, DDS.

She is survived by her sister, Patricia Kaiser; her siblings' spouses, nieces and nephews, and many former students, colleagues, and friends.

Dr. Brodie received her Bachelor's from Loyola University-Chicago School of Nursing, her Master's in Maternal-Child Nursing from Boston University, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Psychology and Human Development from Michigan State University. After receiving her doctorate in 1970, Dr. Brodie moved to Charlottesville for a faculty position at the University of Virginia School of Nursing, where she remained until her retirement in 2002.

At UVA, she led the development of new Masters and Doctoral (PhD) programs in nursing; among her proudest accomplishments are those thousands of graduate students she taught and mentored over the years. Dr. Brodie's awards and honors included the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia's Outstanding Faculty Award-the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty at Virginia colleges and universities. She was also the guiding force in establishing UVA's Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry (now Bjoring Center), becoming its founding director in 1991. It is one of three major nursing history centers in the United States. Additionally, she was a past President of the American Association for the History of Nursing (1990-1993). Dr. Brodie's many publications include the book Mr. Jefferson's Nurses: The University of Virginia School of Nursing, 1901-2001, celebrating the School's Centennial.

At the School of Nursing, several funds are named in Dr. Brodie's honor, including the Barbara M. Brodie Endowed Faculty Fund in Nursing History. This Faculty Fund will become one of the country's first chairs in nursing history when fully funded. Those wishing to make a gift in Dr. Brodie's memory may designate it to the Brodie Faculty Fund (#21043), at UVA School of Nursing, P.O. Box 800826, Charlottesville, VA. 22908-0826.

Dr. Brodie was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish Church. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023, at St. Thomas Aquinas, 401 Alderman Road, Charlottesville, with visitation one hour prior to the Mass.

The Mass will be available by livestream for those unable to attend. See www.hillandwood.com for the link.

Barbara was so gracious and kind to me from the first day I met her in 2015 at the Bjoring Center for Nursing History.

I had the great honor and privilege to work closely with Barbara when she was chair of the maternal-child health department of the UVA School of Nursing when I joined the faculty in 1971. It was my first faculty position. Barbara had an immense impact on my early years as a novice teacher and researcher. We stayed in close touch over the years and I benefited greatly from her guidance and mentoring throughout my career. Most recently, I visited her at her retirement home in Fall 2021 where we had lunch together and spent time reminiscing about UVA, nursing history, and family.
My deepest sympathies to her sister and her many nieces and nephews, whom she cherished. Jan Bellack, Charleston SC
