Barry Taylor Obituary

Barry Michael Taylor

May 12, 1938 - December 8, 2024

Barry Michael Taylor of Charlottesville, VA, passed away on December 8, 2024, after a long illness.

He was born in London, England, the son of Stanley and Ann Taylor, and was one of thousands of children evacuated to the countryside during the "Doodlebug" raids of World War II. After the war, he emigrated to San Francisco with his family, where he had many happy memories browsing the City Lights bookstore and attending Beat poetry readings with his lifelong best friend, Wayne Padgett.

He attended San Francisco State University and the University of Berkeley, and then forged a career in editing and technical writing, with a focus on aviation, business, and health. Later he retired from University of Virginia Health Sciences, where he worked for Health Sciences publications. He is the author of three books the novels Shadow Tiger and The Deadfall Trap, and the non-fiction book Pan-American Clippers. His first book, Shadow Tiger, won the National Writer's Club Contest.

In retirement, he enjoyed reading and volunteering for the Charlottesville Friends of the Library.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia "Trisha" Taylor of Charlottesville; daughter Stephanie Taylor; son-in-law Sascha Meinrath; granddaughters Alice, Eleanor, and Sabine; sister Diane Bacharach; brother-in-law Dave Bacharach; and nieces Kim Chambers and Tara Ortiz.

Trisha deserves special acknowledgment for her many years of caretaking during his battle with dementia. The family would also like to thank the friends and neighbors who provided so much support during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to be made in his memory to Alzheimer's research funds.
