Cynthia Boyd Obituary

Cynthia passed away peacefully, on the morning of August 26, 2022, at UVA's Medical Center Northridge Campus. She was born on April 16, 1947, to Yvonne DuBois and John Scruggs in Philadelphia, Pa.

As a young child her parents moved to Wilson, N.C., where she attended Charles H. Darden High School and furthered her education at East Carolina College now East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., having majored in Elementary Education.

After graduation, she moved to Kinston, N.C., where she met and married her husband of Fifty-two years, Harold.

Cynthia taught briefly at Lewis Elementary School in Kinston, N.C. before moving to Charlottesville, Va., upon completion of Harold's military service. Upon arrival to Charlottesville, she worked at First Virginia Bank before accepting a position as a Transportation Officer for the United States Army at the National Ground Intelligence Center where she was employed until her retirement.

Cynthia was a member of The Charlottesville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and served in the Office of The Treasurer for several years.

Cynthia enjoyed travelling to North Carolina to visit her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren along with spending time with her sister and nephew. Cynthia was an avid tennis fan and loved watching Venus and Serena Williams while on the phone with Lena and Dorsel cheering them on. She also enjoyed numerous Pinochle competitions with friends, Tuck and Liv, as well as her monthly outings with the "Angel Buds" for good food and great conversation, as well as her weekly Pokeno games with Corlis, Rhonda, Dodie, Liv, Sharon and Lynn, until her health declined.

Cynthia leaves to cherish a plethora of memories to her devoted husband, Harold; her daughter, Janika Reid (Leopold) of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Camryn and Ethan Reid of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Karen D. Scruggs of Kinston, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Janette Martin and Lynn Boyd of Charlottesville, Va., and Evelyn White of Chester, Va.; brother-in-law, Jake Boyd III (Janet) of Wilmington, N.C.; niece, Felicia Schultz of Charlottesville, Va.; and nephews, Joshua Pettis of Lexington Park, Md. A host of special friends and family all who were very dear to her.
