Darryl Marshall Obituary

Darryl Marshall of Charlottesville, VA died at the age of 82 on April 8, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife, family, and loyal dog.

He was born in Monterey Park, CA on April 14, 1941. He grew up in Southern California with his parents, sister Lindi and brother Don. He was introduced to fishing by his Grandpa Love and it became a lifelong passion.

Darryl distinguished himself at Roosevelt High School in Fresno, CA, and went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley to study business. He pledged Chi Psi Fraternity his freshman year and made close friends who he cherished throughout his life and was in touch with until the end.

Darryl married Kay Wagner during college and had three sons, David, Bryan, and Richard. After graduating, he took his first job in industrial engineering with U.S. Steel.

Soon after Darryl and his family moved to Peru for a job working at Marcona Mine. He worked in mine administration and his job included developing computer systems. The family lived there for five years, with Richard being born in Peru. Darryl had fond memories of this chapter and was especially proud that he became fluent in Spanish which he used throughout his lifetime.

He had two more stops in New Jersey and Montana, and then happily moved back to Northern California where he worked for the engineering company Bechtel in Sales and Marketing. His career spanned 14 years and he eventually was promoted to Vice President.

Darryl and Kay divorced and he married his wife Jackie in 1982. Jackie had two daughters, Jennifer and Robin, who remained close to the pair throughout their marriage.

Jackie and Darryl had a very close relationship, and everyone who knew them could see that they had an exceptional marriage. They enjoyed traveling together to places like Russia, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and throughout Europe on multiple river cruises. They were proud of visiting all 50 states together, were avid birders, animal lovers, and dog owners throughout their years together. Jackie and Darryl were both members of the Episcopal church and always took an active role in their various parishes.

After retirement, Darryl and Jackie moved to Issaquah, Washington where son David and stepdaughter Jennifer lived with their families. There they spent ten wonderful years enjoying the outdoors, helping with grandchildren, traveling, and lots of salmon fishing.

In 2014, the pair made a move to Charlottesville close to stepdaughter Robin and her family. Darryl was president of the local Fishing Club "Kingfishers" where he established a close bond with fellow fishing enthusiast Clark Tracy. Jackie and Darryl got their doodle Clifford in 2019 who has been a loyal and abiding companion for them both. They found a welcoming church home in Church of our Saviour, forming deep friendships with parishioners who supported Darryl up through his final day.

Darryl died at home after a week of care provided by Hospice of the Piedmont. He had lymphoma which caused complications in his final years, but his attitude was positive and hopeful and he never lost his zest for life. He was bright and clear-minded until the last days, and his wife, three sons, and two stepdaughters were in his constant presence in his final weeks along with clergy, friends, and grandchildren. Love was all that Darryl had in the end, and he had a lot of it.

Darryl is survived by his wife Jackie, sons David (Alice), Bryan, and Richard (Tara), and stepdaughters Jennifer (Don) and Robin (JT), his sister Lindi (Rich) and brother Don (Mary), grandchildren Thomas (Kaelin), Kate (Mike), El (Rosie), Bryan, William (Rachel), Christina (Robbie), Samantha, Andrew, Lauren, Matt, Savannah (Tyus), Summer and great-grandchildren Oliver, Ada, Ruby, and Rose, along with cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Darryl's service will be on Wednesday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at Church of Our Saviour on 1165 Rio Road East, Charlottesville, VA 22901 with a reception at the church immediately following. A room block will be available for the Courtyard by Marriott, 638 Hillsdale Drive, Charlottesville, VA, 22901.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of Our Saviour or Hospice of the Piedmont.

Darryl and I worked together at Marcona Mining Co. in Peru in 1970s, Anaconda Co. in 1970s, and Bechtel Construction in the 1980s, wrote a chapter for 1974 new edition of Mining Engineering Handbook using our Marcona experience as a case study on Management Controls for mining, influencing the course of each others' lives. A great guy, with great mutual friends Bob and Phyllis Pearce, Tony and Betsy Adrian, Dan and Nina Plute, lifelong friends, Darryl and all of whom influenced the course of our respective lives together in very positive ways and oitcomes. Darryl was a wonderful, caring, highly competent and kind friend in so many ways. Thank you, your great family, and God Bless and be with you, Darryl!
