Doug is also survived by nieces Ellen, Laura, and Ginny, and nephew William. He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Lawrence Whitman.
Doug's academic journey ultimately led him to Virginia Tech, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. Doug worked as an engineer for Comdial in Charlottesville until its closure in 2005. Following this, he began his own business as a residential electrician, where he was known for his expertise, work ethic, and being "really smart."
A true jack of all trades and master of many, Doug was a world traveler, pilot, sailor, cyclist, sheep farmer, donkey trainer, kite enthusiast, photographer, shade-tree mechanic, and vocalist. As a chronic tinkerer, Doug had multiple projects running and new ideas bubbling simultaneously. Still, he made time to help friends, family, and his community when needed. Doug was a phenomenal father and grandfather, always encouraging independence and curiosity through "asking questions."
Doug had a beautiful singing voice and performed with numerous musical groups, including the Virginia Consort, Zephyrus, New Lyric Theater, and Mira. Doug and Sallianne traveled the world together, most notably sailing around the Caribbean Sea and across the Atlantic Ocean on Olive Oyl, their 30' Cape Dory cutter.
In accordance with his wishes, Doug's body was donated to the Virginia Department of Health's State Anatomical Program, a testament to his lifelong love of learning. A memorial service and reception will be held at University Baptist Church in Charlottesville, VA on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Doug's family kindly requests that donations be made in his name to support wonderful causes close to his heart. Contributions can be made to.
