Frederick Theodore Heblich Jr. and Mariflo Sanders Stephens Heblich

Frederick Theodore Heblich Jr. died on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. He had leukemia. Mariflo Sanders Stephens Heblich died the following day of complications relating to liver disease. Pillars of Charlottesville and married for 38 years, theirs was a love story for the ages.

They are survived by their two daughters, Elisabeth Jane Stephens Heblich, and Isabel Marie Zermani, as well as their two grandchildren, Frederick Arthur Helleberg and Olivia Pearl Zermani. Mariflo was predeceased by her sister, Melva Potts, and is survived by her brother, Alfred Stephens and her sister, Deanna Taylor. Fred was predeceased by his sister, Suzanne Rostovskis, and is survived by another sister, Janice Nadeau.

Fred was born and raised in Westville, a small town in southern New Jersey, where he attended the local public schools. He attended the University of Virginia and earned undergraduate and law degrees. He practiced law in Charlottesville for 40 years, mostly defending indigent criminal defendants, in private practice and most recently as the Federal Public Defender. He also co-authored the praised book, Holsinger's Charlottesville.

Mariflo was born in Wytheville, Virginia on September 3, 1950, to parents, Frank and Isabel Dean Stephens. She was a fire-twirling majorette who studied music and graduated from James Madison University with a degree in English. An early career in journalism led to a MFA in creative writing from the University of Virginia. A decorated writer and beloved teacher, her writing could be found in The Washington Post, VQR, and multiple anthologies. She was the recipient of both the Thomas Griffiths and Sherwood Anderson prizes for the short story, the Miller Audio prize in prose, and was nominated for the Pushcart prize multiple times. Her recent collection of poetry, Dream Straw, is lauded by colleagues and readers. She shared her gift of creative writing through teaching at Hollins, Hampden-Sydney, and the University of Virginia. Dream Straw and her anthology Some Say Tomato can be found locally at New Dominion Bookshop, where she led a book discussion group for over 20 years.

Please make donations to the Charlottesville SPCA or the National Museum of Women of the Arts in their memories. A memorial will be held in spring.

Both of your parents were so special. I lived across the street from Fred in the 70´s when I was a student at UVA. I believe he was in law school at the time. Later, we worked in related fields - I always enjoyed him when our paths crossed. And your Mom? With her wry wit, her SW Virginia style that reminded me of home, and that Patricia Clarkson voice, she brought life and energy to every situation. They were so fortunate to find each other. I am so sorry that you are having to experience this exponential loss and my thoughts are with both of you, wishing you peace. May their memories come to be a blessing in your lives.

No one was more generous to other writers than Mariflo. When she was hosting a show about writers on WTJU she rushed into the studio about thirty seconds before we went on the air, saying,
Don't worry, it'll be fine. And it was. It was my first book and I had come back home as part of a book tour. She got me involved with the Virginia Festival of the Book, putting in a good word where it counted, introducing me to reporters and other writers around town. I'm a bit shy, so I didn't take any of that for granted. We once spent a hilarious day trying to sell our books at the Gordonsville Street Fair. I don't think she sold any ("Some Say Tomato") and I may have sold three copies of my book, and I was a Gordonsville native. She and Fred were a wonderful couple and Charlottesville won't be the same without them.

I got the privilege of working with Fred at the Defenders office. Very professional and kind....my condolences to the family. The Cville area has lost a great individual along with his wife. But what they left will forever be remembered.

I liked and admired Mariflo a great deal, as both a writer and person. I also know that Fred was an excellent and principled lawyer. I'm heartsick to read not only that both have died, but also that their beloved daughters are having to navigate this unreal tragedy of losing them together.
