November 6, 1940 - April 9, 2021

Dr. Jack Samuel Hirsch of Charlottesville, Va., died on Friday, April 9, 2021, and was preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. Kurt Hirsch of Richmond, Va. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Hall; his brother, Mr. Harry Hirsch and his wife, Lois; his children Ms. Miriam Hirsch of Richmond, Va. and her children, Eve and Spencer Moran, and son-in-law, Thomas Moran, Mrs. Melissa-Hirsch Fielding of Charlottesville, Va. and her husband, Glenn and their children, Jonah, Ethan and Abigail, and Dr. Jonathan Hirsch of Ashland, Va. and his wife, Wendy and their children, Elaine and Jacob; his niece, Mrs. Dara Hirsch Kurtz and her husband, Jon of Winston Salem, N.C. and his nephew, Dr. Ari Hirsch and his wife, Megi of Richmond, Va. He is also survived by the Hall family, children and grandchildren of Charlottesville, Va.

Dr. Hirsch was the son of Dr. Kurt and Margaret Hirsch who came to this country in 1939 as refugees from Nazi Germany. All four of Dr. Hirsch's grandparents, Max Hirsch and his wife, Paula Jakobsohn Hirsch and Sally Bukofzer and his wife, Pauline Goldstrom Bukofzer, perished in the concentration camps in 1942.

Dr. Hirsch grew up in Franklin, Va. where his father was a much loved and respected general surgeon. His family was very active in the Suffolk, Va. Jewish community. During his early years in Franklin, Dr. Hirsch was active in scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. While at Duke University he was a member of Zeta Beta Tau social fraternity and The Harlequins singing group and graduated in 1962 with a BS degree in German. He received his MD degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va. in 1966. Following his internship at Norfolk General Hospital he served in the Air Force as a general medical officer until 1969. He returned to Norfolk General Hospital where he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 1972. After moving to Charlottesville, he founded Jefferson Obstetrics and Gynecology and remained a member until his retirement in 2004. He held many positions at Martha Jefferson Hospital including Chief of the Ob/Gyn Department and Chairman of Surgery. He also served as Virginia Delegate for the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

During his retirement, Dr. Hirsch continued his involvement at Martha Jefferson Hospital as an active volunteer. His retirement years also afforded him the pleasure of participating in many musical events with the Chutzpah choir at Congregation Beth Israel and with the Martin Luther King Community Choir. He devoted many hours to the study of Torah. In 2019 he celebrated his second Bar Mitzvah, sharing this occasion with his granddaughter Eve Moran who received her Bat Mitzvah at the same time. Other retirement pleasures included spending time with his family, and vacationing at the Outer Banks as well as the Blue Ridge Mountains.

There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Congregation Beth Israel, 301 E. Jefferson St, Charlottesville, VA, 22902, Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation - Women's Health, or Charlottesville Free Clinic.

Dear Laura and family,
There is nothing that can be said to express the sadness for the bright light that has gone out with Jack's passing. Every time he entered a space he filled it with his uniqueness of brightness, laughter, and charm. He could play cards on a laboring woman's lap or stroll into the room with a flashing fireman's hat and wading boots to elicit laughter or have deep conversations to pass the time. It was always the unknown from him that kept us on our toes and brought us joy to be around him. These are the memories of a wonderful soul that we share and part of the reason Jack is Loved so deeply. May the Peace of Grace Be with you all in your days now.

As a co-member of Congregation Beth Israel, I had the pleasure of getting to know Jack through our time together in the Chutzpah Choir and as an audience member at the many Purim spiels in which he so elegantly and eloquently played Queen Esther. He was a fun-loving and generous human. Peace to your family.

Laura and family, so sorry for the loss of such a great man! Jack was a force to be reckoned with! His sense of humor and easy going personality lit up the world! As a nurse I admired his compassion and professionalism. Jack was never too busy to provide his coworkers with feedback and a huge helping hand! Exceptional skills caring for and about his patients, his family and the entire community! You will be missed dear man! We will forever keep you in our memories!

Sending prayers of sympathy and love to the entire family of Dr. Jack Hirsch. He was my Dr. for 30 years till he took sabbatical leave. I remember his nurse Paula Coffey telling me about this and my blood pressure went sky high! He came in and wanted to know why my blood pressure was so high and if I was OK. I politely and tearfully told him it was due to the fact of him leaving as he had been my Dr. since 1974. He patted me on the back and said it would be OK and I could see one of the other Drs. in his office.
Dr. Hirsch had a wonderful sense of humor and would tell us "not to run away as he would be right back!" I am sure I and many other ladies knew we could not run far with those small coverings they provided! I remember telling him I would need a date to give to our Nurse at SF regarding when my due date was. Once again his humor shone through "How can I give an accurate date? I do not remember being there when this child was conceived!"
He
Dr. Hirsch was an awesome doctor who took the time to listen and was adored by all. I also had the privilege of seeing him at SMJH many occasions when I started volunteering. We will not say goodbye as we will see him again one day. May your many, many precious memories comfort you in the days ahead. My prayer is that God will hold each of you in the palm of his hand. "Well done thy good and faithful Servant"
Love, Lynn Rutherford-Snow
