Jeffrey Gordon Mawyer, 54, of Charlottesville, passed away on June 20, 2024, after an extended battle with renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer).

Born in Charlottesville on February 5, 1970, he was preceded in death by his father, Warren McIntyre Mawyer, of Charlottesville, but is survived by his mother, Margaret Anne Beverley Mawyer. He is also survived by his son, Mitchell Chandler Mawyer, of Charlottesville; his sister, Kimberly Mooney Elliott; brother-in-law, M. Scott Elliott; and nephew, Taylor Scott Elliott, all of Bartlett, Tennessee. Two sets of aunts and uncles, Page and Martha Beverley, and Jim and Joan Carpenter, of Charlottesville; cousins, Hunter Lee Beverley, Wanda Hudson and her husband Chuck, Wilson Proffitt and his wife Shirley; and his special friend, Connie Smith Roberts; along with countless numbers of people who will always remember what a terrific person he was.

Jeffrey Gordon Mawyer was named in honor of his grandfather, the late Gordon Beverley, of Charlottesville. As a youngster, he was a star pitcher and catcher for the Volunteer Firemen Team at Monticello Little League. He was honored to be coached during those early years by his father, who enjoyed baseball as much, if not more than Jeffrey did. In middle school, he advanced to play as a starting catcher for Coach John Mimms in the Lane Babe Ruth League. Jeffrey was a double letterman in baseball and basketball during high school for CHS on the junior varsity and varsity teams. He was especially fond of his role supporting the Black Knights as a rotating pitcher and catcher during his four years of high school. An honor graduate of Charlottesville High School's Class of 1988, Jeffrey was a class officer serving as Vice President to the student body during his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. He was elected President of the graduating class during his senior year. In the yearbook Senior Superlatives section, Jeff was voted Best Dressed Man.

After high school, Jeffrey entered the workforce equipped and dedicated to serving the Charlottesville community in vehicle repair and maintenance with his experience gained from attending CATEC (Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center). From a young age, he loved cars and car stereo systems, initially leading him to work for Stereotypes on 29 North. He then obtained a Certified Vehicle Safety Inspection diploma from Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) and worked for Settle Tire Company. Thereafter, he worked for Meineke Car Care Center, where he put his state inspection skills to good use for several years. Most recently, he was employed as a top-notch mechanic and state inspector at Airport Motors and Marshall Tire and Auto. Jeffrey was a dedicated, reliable worker and well-liked by everyone who knew him. He was popular and made friends wherever he went.

He attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School services at Belmont Baptist Church from a young age. Just after his 10th birthday, Jeffrey was baptized with his family and became a member of Northside Baptist Church, participating actively for many years with their youth group. Throughout his prolonged illness, however, he was especially grateful to the support of Pastor Clay Marsh and the congregation of Charlottesville First Church of the Nazarene for their ongoing prayers and support.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Devitt, his oncologist at the UVa Hematology & Oncology Cancer Center, and his oncology nurse, Gloria McDaniel, for their professional care and compassion during his lengthy battle with kidney cancer.

The family will receive visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Hill & Wood Funeral Service, Charlottesville. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., at Hill & Wood on Friday, June 28, 2024, and a graveside service will follow immediately thereafter at Holly Memorial Gardens with Pastor Clay Marsh officiating.
