John Gregg Obituary
December 15, 1921 - May 23, 2024
Born in Boston, MA, on December 15, 1921, he was raised in Park Ridge, IL. He passed away May 23, 2024 near Nashville, TN. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. October 19 at Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church in Charlottesville.
He graduated from Lawrence College in Appleton, WI. He left from there directly to the US Army in WWII. He served as a lieutenant in WWII and the Korean War and retired as a Regular Army Lieutenant Colonel after 28 years service. In 1945 he married Nancy W. Holman of Idaho, and they were married 66 years. He and Nancy had three children: Martha Wrenn Demetrion, Barbara Leigh and John H. Gregg.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother Col Clifford Gregg, USAR, (director and then president of the Field Museum of Natural History) and Marian V. Gregg; brothers CDR Frank V. Gregg, USN, and Clifford C. Gregg, Jr.; and his wife Nancy H. Gregg.
He will be buried with his wife and daughter Barbara Leigh Gregg in Charlottesville, VA, where he worked for the University of Virginia. He lived there for 43 years.
Memorial services are planned at Church of Our Savior in Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers, John requests donations be made to The Episcopal Diocese Region XV Mission with the Elderly in Charlottesville, where he served as president for several years.
