Judith Arnold Obituary

Judith "Judy" Bessom Arnold, born on May 15, 1946, in Boston, MA, passed away on April 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was the cherished daughter of Cortland Lewis Bessom and Dorothy Marguerite Ball, both from Mansfield, MA. Judy's early life was one of diversity, shaped by living in various countries due to her father's military service. She embraced the rich cultures of Japan and the Philippines while living there in her early years, laying the foundation for a life filled with appreciation for her unique experiences. Notably, she met life-long friends and her future spouse, Richard Dinwiddie Arnold II, during her time at the Paris-American High School in France. While living in Europe, she even embarked on bicycle journeys through the scenic landscapes of Holland. Throughout her life, Judy continued to maintain a special reverence for all service members and their families.

Returning to the United States, Judy embraced motherhood with a profound sense of devotion and wisdom, drawing upon her worldly experiences to nurture her children in Northern Virginia. Her home became a sanctuary of comfort and warmth, where she delighted in witnessing her children's triumphs and walking with them through life's milestones.

Mid-life, she loved spending many weekends country dancing. However, this didn't compare to football season, which was a time of great excitement for Judy, where her cheers for her favorite teams echoed through the house, infusing gatherings with laughter and camaraderie. She treasured her loved ones, reflected by small mementos that displayed the depth of her relationships and the beauty of her soul.

Judy will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who were touched by her warmth and unwavering support. Her legacy of love, resilience, and kindness will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.

Judy is survived by her four beloved children, Richard "Rick" Dinwiddie Arnold III, Carolyn "Carrie" Arnold Etgen (Garret), Catherine "Cat" Arnold Morgan, and Adrienne Arnold Ommaya (Alexander), her 13 grandchildren, Fiona, Henry, Dean, Jude, Cortland, Cameron, Cailyn, Chloe, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Samuel, Nicholas and Jacob Cady, as well as her three great-grandchildren, Wren, Rowan and Tolley. She is also survived by her four siblings, Richard "Rick" Bessom (Sharon), David "Dave" Bessom (Terri), Edward "Ed" Bessom, and Jacqueline "Jackie" Bessom Rockwell, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

The family is in the process of arranging a memorial service and details will be announced online once they are finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Hospital of Richmond or the National Association of Rare Diseases.

May Judy's spirit continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her, forever remembered and cherished.

Over the years, we only saw Judy at the occasional family wedding, but it was always a pleasure to visit and catch up with her. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends who will always keep her in their hearts.

Though I didn't see my Aunt Judy as often as I would have liked, she was always a loving and warm aunt, ready with a hug and many kind words. Distance did not make any difference to how much I loved her.

I've tried many times to put into words how Judy has enhanced my life and how grateful I am to have such a loving sister. Our age difference dictated that we didn't grow up together but she was always a phone call away and I was very fortunate to be able to spend the last two years living with her and getting to know her better. I miss her every day.
