Harriette Daniel Thorne Kent, 93, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017. Born on August 15, 1924, in Rocky Mount, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Theophilus Taylor Thorne and Harriette Elizabeth Daniel. She was also preceded in death by her husband, A. Holland Kent Jr.; and a brother, Theophilus Taylor Thorne of Danville, Calif. She was a graduate of Randolph Macon Women's College and the Medical College of Virginia (LPN). Harriette was a charter member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder, historian circle leader and Sunday school teacher. She served on the old City Mission Board. She volunteered as a Pastoral Care at St. Mary's Hospital. Harriette was presented with a commendation for outstanding volunteer service in the Richmond area Presbyterians. Her passion for genealogy, writing and family led her to be an active member on the Board of Friends of the Virginia Archives. She was a charter member of Genealogical Research Institute of Virginia, Virginia Genealogical Society, Richmond Scottish Society and served as Historian and Genealogist for the Commonwealth Chapter of the DAR. She served on the Board of the Historic Halifax Restoration Association of Halifax, N.C. She was the author of Swampers-Free Blacks and the Great Dismal Swamp. Surviving is a daughter, Harriette Lindsay White (Richard H.) of Bremo Bluff, Va.; and a son, Alphonso "Al" Holland Kent III (Julia) of Chesterfield, Va.; five grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017, by the Reverend Patrick A. Dennis. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of Westminster Canterbury for the care and kindness shown their mother. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contribution be made to the Westminster Canterbury's Clinical Education Fund, 1600 Westbrooke Ave., Richmond VA 23227. Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store, Va., is handling the arrangements.
