Levi Erskine Hawkins Sr.

October 13, 1941 - October 8, 2021

Levi Erskine Hawkins Sr., age 79, went to join his parents and his beloved brother and sister in God's House on Friday, October 8, 2021.

Levi was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on October 13, 1941 to Frank "Major" and Alonzo Cordelia Hawkins.

Levi was raised in Charlottesville and attended Jackson P. Burley High School. Growing up in Virginia he loved to swim and was known as a sharp dresser.

Levi met his beloved wife, Hattie Mae, in high school. They especially enjoyed their weekly dates dancing at the O.D.D. Fellows Hall. The high school sweethearts eventually married on October 14, 1962.

Levi was a great chef. He worked at Harrah's Hotel & Casino for over 20 years. He eventually retired as the head chef at Stockton University in Galloway.

Levi loved dogs and western movies. His favorite comedian was Redd Fox and he loved to watch Sanford and Son. He loved to collect Jordan sneakers and many different sorts of hats. He loved playing the lottery and trying his luck with scratch-offs. He loved his family and gave them all special nicknames.

Levi was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Geraldine; his brother, Edwin; and his nephew, Melvin. He leaves to cherish his many memories his beloved wife, Hattie Mae; his brother, Reginald; his sons, Levi Jr. (Wanda), Charles, Kevin (Wanda); grandchildren, Ke'vona, Javon, La'quay, Malasia, Kayla Conyer (Justin), Camden, Daija, and Justin; great-grandchildren, JaMir Hawkins, Ka'mirra King, Ti'mirah Cassell and Joshua Dockery and his favorite nephew, Kelly Yates, and many family and friends, too numerous to list.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 11 a.m., at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.

To Hattie, Reginald and all the Hawkins family: I am deeply sorry to hear of Levi's passing. Though I did not see him very much in recent years, I consider him one of the old Rosenwald, Albemarle Training School group which I will never forget and I absolutely loved his dear mother. I'm sure that all of you will have your special memories of Levi to keep in your minds and hearts forever; the hats, the George Jefferson walk. I know you all have your own personal memories of Levi. I'm asking God to bless each and every one of you abundantly in your time of sorrow. see
