Marguerite Buck Obituary

Marguerite "Meg" Ann Doubleday Buck

October 29, 1936 - January 3, 2021

Marguerite "Meg" Ann Doubleday Buck, of Bernardsville, N.J., passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at the age of 84. Meg was born on October 29, 1936 in New York City to George Chester Doubleday and Mary Patricia Kelley Doubleday of Upper Brookville, Long Island and New York City.

Meg grew up with her two sisters, Pat and Dorothy, in Upper Brookville, Long Island. She attended Green Vale School, Ethel Walker School and New York School of Interior Design. She was married on February 8, 1958 to Charles Austin Buck of Far Hills, N.J., who pre-deceased her in 2016.

Meg and Austin raised their children, Leonard, Wendy and Belinda in Bernardsville, N.J., where Meg pursued her creative passions of painting, interior design and horticulture. She accompanied Austin on numerous adventures abroad, memorializing their travels in beautiful photographs. Her impeccable eye was apparent in the welcoming homes and inspired gardens that they built together in the ensuing years, in both Bernardsville and Spring Island, S.C.

The love for Montana that was instilled in the Doubleday/Kelley clan lived on in Meg's enthusiastic participation in summer activities at the E/L Ranch in Greenough, Mont. She shared Austin's interest in fly fishing, and their life together included many happy hours spent on dappled rivers, enjoying the pursuit of elusive salmon and trout.

Meg is survived by her sister, Dorothy Doubleday Massey of Santa Fe, N.M.; her children: Belinda Buck Kielland, Wendy Buck Brown, and Leonard Jerome Buck; and her beloved seven grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Vista unit of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, Va. who cared for Meg during her lengthy journey through the cruel fog of Alzheimer's.

Donations in Meg's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.

Dear Belinda, Wendy, and Lee,

We just noticed the announcement of Mrs. Buck's passing. We express our heartfelt condolences to all of you.

Time flies by so quickly. The wonderful memories of living on your parent's property in Bernardsville for 12 years was a blessing in so many ways. We were able to save for our house in Mendham and for me to start my own business. One of the biggest blessings was when they gave Pippin to us. Pippin was so protective of Zachary when we had him. We adored her! Such joy is unsurpassed!

We were so fortunate and blessed because of the kind opportunity Mr. & Mrs. Buck gave to us. Their memories will last forever in our hearts and minds. Alzheimer's disease is a cruel disease, and we are so very sorry she was afflicted with this. It is also so extremely difficult for family members.

We would like you to know how thankful and blessed we were to have known your dear mother, and our hearts are saddened. There is no one in this world like your mother. She was a special woman and she will be with you always. “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

Many blessings to all of you.

Wishing you peace,

Diane & Randy Smith

To all who knew and loved meg I send my heartfelt condolences. I only knew her briefly during the time I worked for Austin in their beautiful home in Bernardsville and can attest to her keen eye for decorating and gardening! Peace and love to you all.
