Mark Alan Rasmussen

1957 - 2023

Mark Alan Rasmussen Mark passed away at his home. Mark was born in Cheverly, MD to the late Gernot and Doris Rasmussen. He spent his childhood at his family dairy farm in Madison, VA and graduated from Madison County High School in 1976.

Mark's experience with cattle led him to different cattle management jobs around Orange County, VA. He was then offered a job working for his friend who had started a garbage collecting business, and it was there at the trash toter that he met his wife to be, Christine. Mark and Chris moved from Charlottesville, VA to Durham in 1994, where Mark obtained a degree in health safety at Durham Tech, and then joined Duke's Occupational and Environmental Safety Office in 1998, where he remained a valued employee until his retirement in 2019.

Mark had several passions throughout his life. He was a lover of music and a skilled drummer and played for different local rock bands early in his life. Mark was an avid scuba diver, and obtained high levels of scuba certification including Dive Master and Cave Diver. Mark was a history buff, particularly with regards to military history. He loved his country, and had a great admiration for all U.S. service members and would always make a point to thank them for their service.

Mark is survived by his wife, Christine, his sons, Eric and Cole; sister Laura (Ray) Rasmussen; brother Paul Rasmussen; nephews Paul (Kim) Rasmussen, Matthew (Erin) Lohr, and David (Kellie) Rasmussen; nieces Terri (Mike) Ramirez, Erin (Jake) Bakst, and Stephanie Andreasen, several great nieces and nephews, and his favorite little dog, Winnie. Mark is predeceased by his sisters Carol Reilly and Gail McDonald and his niece Susan Martin.

A celebration of life is scheduled Friday July 28, 5 pm, Durham Exchange
