Michael Francis Barrett

1943 - 2022

Michael Francis Barrett was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on February 22, 1943. Sadly, he passed away there on December 8, 2022, from cancer complicated by Covid. He was a revered father, husband, brother, friend, and colleague.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Leah Johnston Barrett; four sons, Tom, Eddie, Donnie and Mike; his sister, Sheila Barrett Conley; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mike brought wit and humor into the world. Those that he encountered – friends, family, and strangers on the street - invariably thought more, laughed more and more clearly saw the joy life serves up hot and fresh each day. He was a man who made life a little lighter for us and so a little more livable too. He saw a future for his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in which they each lived on the leading edge of their best possibilities. He loved discovery. He knew few boundaries. For those he loved, he was coach and counselor, advisor and advocate.

Mike and Leah lived happily on their rural farm, raising many barnyard pets including pigs, goats, alpacas, and numerous dogs and cats. Mike enjoyed walking on and working on his land, and was most proud of his round house. In his last months he deeply bonded with Krissy, a cat that warmed his lap and eased his worries.

Mike's personal interests included global travel and the arts. He was an inspired artist, creating many paintings and drawings, and a regular patron of the Richmond Ballet. Mike and Leah's travels included trips across the United States and internationally. Mike's community was important to him. He was a member of the Stony Point Ruritan Club for 35 years, where he led many projects to enhance the rural community and made many lasting local friendships.

Mike brought laughter and levity to nearly every situation he encountered. He made life funnier and richer for all of us.

A memorial celebration for Mike will be held in the Spring.
