Miyagawa George Robert

Captain George Robert "Bob" Miyagawa, USN (Ret.) went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 23, 2016. He was born on July 30, 1932 to George Yoshio and Myra Nielsen Miyagawa in Kalamazoo, Michigan.Bob is survived by his wife, Bonny Miyagawa; his older brother, James Miyagawa and wife, Betty; his son, John Miyagawa; his daughter, Kay Miyagawa Ennis and husband, Bill Ennis; his granddaughters, Mary Beth Miyagawa and Sharon Miyagawa; grandsons, Tucker Ennis and Trevor Ennis; nephews, Dave Miyagawa and wife, Marcia, and Tom Miyagawa and wife, Mary Claire.A nephew, James Robert Miyagawa predeceased him in October 2015.He married Ellen Jane Brooks of Marshall, Michigan, and they were married for over 50-years, until her passing in 2006. Late in life, he was fortunate to find love and companionship with his wife, Bonny Turner, whom he married on July 20, 2013.Bob graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1954, with a degree in Economics. He then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955, served for 23 years and retired as a Captain in 1978. He piloted land-and carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft in the Pacific and North Atlantic for ten years. He was an instructor in warfare tactics at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Bob was Communications Commander in the Pacific Command during the Viet Nam war era. He served as the Air Operations Officer on the USS Hornet for the Apollo 12 recovery mission in the South Pacific. He concluded his Naval career as Commanding Officer of a tactical air control group based in Norfolk, Va., supporting NATO in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. He earned a Masters Degree in Aerospace Operations Management in 1969 from the University of Southern California. After retiring from the Navy in 1978, he went on to work for Virginia Electric and Power Company at Bremo Bluff, Va.,for ten years as a Systems/Cost Analyst.His wife, Bonny, wishes to especially thank Dr. Jamie Kennedy and all the nurses and staff at the UVA Medical Center for their kindness.There will be a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m., with memorial services to follow on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Westover United Methodist Church, 2801 Fredericksburg Rd., Ruckersville, VA 22968.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Westover United Methodist Church Building Fund or Caring for Creatures, 352 Sanctuary Ln., Palmyra, VA 22963.An online guestbook is available at www.ryanfuneral.comRyan Funeral Home of Ruckersville, Va. is handling the arrangements.
