Isaiah James Mosby, 88, of Covesville, Virginia, died peacefully on Thursday night, November 2, 2017, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. He was born on April 13, 1929, to the late Benjamin W. Mosby, Sr. and Elenora Whindleton Mosby Dowell, in Covesville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Ethel Childress Mosby; stepfather, Elkin Dowell; one brother, Benjamin W. Mosby, Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita Dowell and Mattie Barron. Isaiah was baptized and joined First Baptist Church Covesville at an early age. Isaiah attended Esmont High School. He served in the United States Marines for four years. When he was discharged from service, he married Ethel Childress and moved to New Jersey. They joined the Elizabeth Avenue Weequahic Presbyterian Church in Newark and were very active members. He worked at Federal Pacific Electric in Newark, N.J. until he retired. Isaiah and his wife lived for 40 years in New Jersey and returned home to Covesville after retirement. Isaiah and Ethel joined First Baptist Church Covesville where they remained faithful. While at First Baptist, Isaiah was a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School, Vice President of the Young People's Club, and a member of the Official Board, Missionary Society, Senior Choir, Men's Choir, and Gospel Chorus. Isaiah was an active bowler and continued to bowl for a few months prior to his death. He leaves to cherish his memory, nephew/son, Dennis Childress; three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Allen of Charlottesville, Mrs. Ethelene Brown of Faber, Va., and Mrs. Bertha Bell of East Orange, N.J.; one brother, Nathaniel Mosby (Barbara) of Fort Washington, Md.; a devoted niece, Mrs. Sharon Vest (John) of North Garden, Va.; a goddaughter, the Rev. Deborah Robinson Jones (Arthur) of Suwannee, Ga.; a number of devoted nieces, nephews and cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Covesville, 5883 Henderson Lane, Covesville, VA 22931, with the Reverend Joe N. Chambers, Jr., officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services. J.F.
