Norma Mills Obituary
March 15, 1925 - April 23, 2021
Norma Lee Mills, age 96, of Earlysville, Virginia, passed peacefully away on April 23, 2021, in her home with her children at her bedside.
Norma Lee Nowack was born on March 15, 1925, in Chetek, Wisconsin, and her family moved to Oregon when she was in high school. She attended Woodburn High School where she met her husband, Rod.
She married Rod A Mills on June 8, 1947. They moved to Southern California and had two children, Karen Lee Mills and David Jon Mills.
Norma was a full-time homemaker and devoted mother. Her children can't remember having a house key because she was always home to greet them and welcome neighborhood playmates. In 1969, her husband, Rod accepted a job working for NASA and the family moved to Alexandria, Virginia. Norma was employed at JC Penney's working in the men's wear department.
In 1988 Norma and Rod moved to Earlysville, Virginia. They joined the Ivy Creek United Methodist Church where she was a member of Sarah's Circle. She and Rod volunteered at the Emergency Food Bank and the Soup Kitchen.
She loved traveling with her husband. They were lucky enough to travel to Australia, New Zealand, Alaska and Europe. She was passionate about birding and was lucky enough to see the return of the hummingbirds this year.
Many people may remember her riding in the Earlysville 4th of July Parade, which she did for 10 years. It was a joy to see her laughing and throwing Mardi Gras beads to onlookers out of Rod's Model A Ford.
She is survived by her son, Dave Mills; daughter, Karen Mills-Thomas; son-in-law, Cameron Thomas; grandsons, Cam Thomas and Jon Thomas; and step-granddaughter, Terry Thomas.
A private service was held on Friday, April 30, 2021, for the family.
