He served on the Albemarle County Equalization Boards, was a member of the Virginia Vineyard Association, and held the position of chairman and secretary on the Albemarle County Electoral Board. Dick was an amateur radio operator and was one of the founding members of the Albemarle Amateur Radio Club. Upon retirement, Dick and Anna enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and many other destinations.

Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Watson Florence; his sister, Joan Florence Tutan of Atlanta, Ga.; his children, Richard Bruce Florence Jr. (Antonia), and Mary Florence D'Agnese (Victor III); five grandsons, Benjamin Florence (Sarah), Donald Florence (Wendy), Tucker Florence (Lindsay), Ian D'Agnese, and Evan D'Agnese; two great-granddaughters, Temperance and Isabelle Florence; and two nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 11 a.m. at Stanardsville Cemetery with Pastor Gayle Johnson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Westover United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2801 Fredericksburg Rd., Ruckersville, VA 22968.

I'm glad that I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Florence. He was such a gentleman, and Mrs. Florence is wonderful, and gave Mr. Florence such wonderful care. He is in a good place (probably smiling at you), but I
know you have broken hearts. If there is anything I can do to be supportive, please let me know.

I was a grad student at UVa when I met Dick in 1968 through the amateur radio club. He was then president. I was at the farm many times, and maintained a warm friendship with him until departure from Charlottesville in 1972. He was kind and generous in all of our relationships. The image in my mind is of him in 1972 -- perhaps that's a good thing
