Robert Latham Murray
Robert Latham Brundred Murray

Dr. Latham Murray, of Earlysville, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 29, 2009, at Panorama Farms, his childhood home.

Born March 8, 1951, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Langhorne King Murray; their five children, Brad, Wistar, Jack, Margaret, and Stephen; along with his parents, James B. Murray and Jean Brundred Murray; and seven brothers James B. Murray Jr., Matthew B. Murray, Christopher B. Murray, Stephen M. Murray, Andrew B. Murray, Thomas A. Murray and Timothy B. Murray, and their families.

He graduated from Albemarle High School in 1969. He received a B.S. in Psychology from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1973, and his Medical Degree from the University of Virginia in 1981. He later completed an internship and residency at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, New York, and a fellowship in Non-cardiac Thoracic Surgery at East Birmingham Hospital in Birmingham, England.

He was an Attending Surgeon at Mary Imogene Hospital and later at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Maryland, before joining the Medical Staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital in July 1995. Dr. Murray was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and Board Certified in General Surgery with added accreditation in Thoracic Surgery. He was a member of CRL Surgical and Radiology Associates in Charlottesville.

Dr. Murray served in a number of leadership capacities at Martha Jefferson Hospital, including the Hospital Board of Trustees and most recently serving as the Chair of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation Board. Throughout his career, his focus never waivered from the personal care and interaction he enjoyed with countless patients and their families. He served our community with pride and great satisfaction.

Outside the hospital, Latham was a stone mason, tree surgeon, cabinetmaker and writer. He will be fondly remembered for his passion and unique skill in working with his hands on the farm or in the shop. His greatest life's work was shaping the lives of his loving children and family.

He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Wednesday, December 2, 2009.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the New Year at a date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Martha Jefferson Hospital Capital Campaign, 459 Locust Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22902 or the Charlottesville Free Clinic, 1138 Rose Hill Drive, Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

To the Murray family....I just learned yesterday when I called his office to ask his advice and learned he had passed away in November, what a shock it was to me. Dr. Murray did surgery on me 4 yrs ago and I have never forgot him. I have lived in New York, Alaska, Seattle and now here in C'ville. I have had many doctors thru the years, but he was by far the best I have ever known. Since I was new to C'ville, whenever I needed a specialty doctor, I would call him and ask his advice on who to go to. After he performed my surgery, I was back in his office for the post-op visit and as I was leaving, he took my hand and said "Thank you for trusting me." I have told that story over and over again thru the years and it never fails to get a reaction of "ohhh". Like all women, we would love to see more doctors have the tenderness this doctor possessed. He was wonderful, I will truly miss him and my heart goes out to his family.

Latham Murray was one of my dearest and most influential friends, for the couple of years we were intimates. I've only just learned of his passing, this evening, and wish to send my love and best wishes to his beloved wife and children, along with the rest of his family, many whom I met in the early '70s.

I was at Trinity when Willie Schaeffer introduced me to Latham (whom I only later learned was known as Larry in the rest of his life--I only, tonight learned his given name, Robert). We were, immediately and forever, kindred spirits, reconnected. In the next two years, we lit up each other, through music, poetry, literature, writing and, yes, women and imagination and he left a huge 'mark' on/in me. Sorry that I fell so out of touch, for so long; sorry to have learned so late of his passing; I, myself nearly died 11 years ago, on an operating table that Latham could have been directing, but I wanted to say how much I love and cherish this man and his memory. Blessings on his beloved wife, children and remaining family, ...Bruce Bailey

Dear Murray Family,
I am a nurse at Memorial Hospital, Easton, Maryland. I learned from a patient I met today, of Dr. Murray's passing. How shocked and saddened I am to hear this news. This patient was one of hundreds I have cared for who credit Dr. Murray with saving their life and becoming their friend! I remember very clearly one night he stayed by a surgical patient's side for twelve hours in the ICU. He helped me give nursing care, monitor vital signs, gave me orders, took orders from me (ha ha) and held the patient's hand. He was continuously updating and comforting the family. He knew what was important about medicine; the person within the patient. What a genuine human being he was! I am honored to have known and learned from him. Take comfort in knowing he made this world a better place.

Dear Langhorne, children and family, We were so sad to hear of Latham's untimely death and will contact you personally but do want to contribute to this Guest Book. We so valued meeting you all when Latham was working in the UK at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Latham was clearly a committed surgeon and approached his work with enthusiasm, humility and a great sense of humour. He was well liked by patients as well as staff. We enjoyed the times we spent together socially. Our thoughts are with you all at this difficult time. With love Jane and John (Nottingham, UK)

Dear Murray's,

I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to spend time with you family and Latham.

I'll never forget the time he wrote a letter to JMU after I was wait-listed about my character. I always felt so grateful every time I saw him after that making sure he knew how much that meant to me. That was kinda guy he was to me - if he could help in anyway he would.

He meant so much to my family and was inspiration to me as an athlete as well. When mom told he ran from his house to Monticello High School to watch a game of Patrick and Stevie's I thought that was impossible. 20 some miles! (I was in 8th grade at the time) I thought about him and that story during my first marathon 2 years ago. It is possible! Thanks for helping me wrap that around my mind Latham!

I will miss him greatly, but will never forget the great great things about him.

Thoughts and prayers are with your family, hope to see you all soon.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Latham. Helping him set up his practice in Charlottesville and working with him for many years was a priviledge. He had such a special bedside manner and was always finding something in common with his patients (i.e. hunting, fishing, writing, etc). I feel fortunate to have also been a part of the the trip to Hiati with him and many other colleagues. It was obvious that his family always came first and that he took a lot of pride in all of them. This is a very sad loss to all who knew and loved him and to the community to which he gave so much. My sincere sympathy to all his family, Betty Allen

When I heard the news about Latham, I grieved as if my own flesh and blood had died. My brother Darren began dating Latham's daughter Wistar in 2004, and both Lang and Latham immediately welcomed me into their fold and cherished my infant daughter as a surrogate granddaughter. When I lost my husband, they held us close and babysat for her and included us in all the Murray family Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. This fall, Latham came and picked up Harper to take her to the MJH picnic so that I could go to a rehearsal. Latham always had a hug and kiss for me, and a gentle ribbing about my ladies arm wrestling "career." When he died, my arm wrestling trading cards were still in his wallet. How anyone can accomplish as much as he did and find time to love and exude joy as often as he did is a mystery. May we all learn to to live and love better by his example. How I miss him and grieve for his family's loss and my own.

Elaine and I were shocked and saddened to hear about the passing away of Latham. I was a colleague of his for 10 years at Martha Jefferson when I was one of the Pulmonologists on staff. He was my “Go To Doc” when I needed someone to perform thoracic surgery on one of my lung patients. More than that he was a great guy and a friend. Elaine and I will have him and his family in our prayers. The Charlottesville Community and Martha Jefferson has lost one of the best.

Joel and I were shocked and so very saddened to hear about Latham's untimely death just now. Our children, Noah and Dena, were lucky to know Jack and Margaret at Albermarle High School. Through the years, we saw Latham and Lang at various events. They were always gracious hosts and warm acquaintances. We will always remember Latham's wonderful smile and welcoming ways. My sincere condolences go out to the Murray family. I had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Murray at The Memorial Hospital at Easton. I am very sorry for you loss. I cannot believe that he is gone. I have enjoyed talking to Latham over the years. He was one of my favorite fellow resident. My deepest condolences to family, friends, and patients who grapple with the loss of one unspeakably dear. Larry and I grew up together at Albemarle High School and were in the same class. I hold many warm memories spanning shared friends, classrooms, cafeteria, locker rooms, ball fields, sock hops, gymnasiums, pep rallies, homecomings, and proms. After school we changed in the same area of the AHS locker room for our sports endeavors. We shared the joy of going 10-0-0 as Valley District football champions our senior year, the sweet fruit of grueling, sweltering two-a-day summer practices. I last spoke with him at our 20-year high school reunion where I learned he had become a surgeon and was practicing in Maryland. To my knowledge Larry is the only one from our class of about 300 that pursued medicine and then returned to serve his home community as a physician.

The stunning news of Latham’s tragic death has underscored anew for me the fragility of the life by which God has shown us mercy. Most of us believe heaven exists. We who remain would do well to ponder the greatness and holiness of God, the enormity of our predicament, and what we are trusting to bridge the infinite chasm while we yet have time before death likewise seizes upon us.

Ann and I were deeply saddened by the untimely death of Latham. He was a wonderful father, husband and clinician who was loved by all who knew him. We are grateful that he has such a large and loving family who have already transformed this tragic event into something far more meaningful than just a death of an individual. It is time to support his family and the causes Latham held dear.

My husband and I became a part of Lang and Latham's wonderful family when my son, Darren, married their wonderful daughter, Wistar last year. We have so enjoyed knowing them and have looked forward to the years ahead when we would not only share children, but possibly grandchildren. Latham was so much a part of that and we cherish the few times we were in his presence as a loving, warm and caring friend, husband, father, and father-in-law. We are so saddened by his death and will miss him greatly.

Larry ( as I called him back in the early 70-'s) was one of my best friends at the Elmo House. I am so saddened to hear of his death, he had the great ability to make all around him smile and feel better. Just last year we spent several hours at the Elmo reunion at Carr's Hill laughing about old times and what he was doing now. My daughtor is now an RN at UVA hospital and I told her several weeks ago if there is a medical problme to go to Dr. Murray . What a wonderful friend and person. I wish I could say something to his family to ease the pain of his loss but he was truly a genuine loving person and I am better now having been his friend

The news of Dr. Murray's untimely passing shocked and saddened me. I first met him in 2003 when I needed minor surgery. Dr. Murray's passing is a tremendous loss not only to his family, but to the community. Dr. Murray operated on my daughter in 2007 when she was 8 years old. My daughter had a very serious appendicitis case that later had complications requiring a second hospital stay. Dr. Murray with his easy smile, thoughtfulness and gentle bedside manner made Kristen feel at ease during this very scary time. Dr. Murray was not only an excellent surgeon, but he was a very gracious, caring person with a smile that went straight to his eyes! Someone like Dr. Murray is a rare find in the medical profession these days. His presence will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time.

Dear Murrays all -

I was so shocked and saddened when I found out about Latham's death. When I think of our wonderful visits to the farm as a child, I remember his wonderful smile. He just lit up the room with it and with his joie de vie. In reading what people said here, it's clear he was the same throughout his life.

I'm thinking of you lots, and my prayers are with all of you.

All my love -

I am still having a difficult time accepting the loss of one of my favorite surgeons. The bantering we would have back and forth in the mornings I miss greatly. One night when he was on call I woke him up at 5:00 am and had to call back not long after that. He wasn't in his normal mood and it wasn't long that he arrived at the hospital and joked with me asking if I woke up each morning in a good mood and then we both continued to laugh together as well as with his patient. He was so good with each of his patients talking to them and taking the time at the bedside to listen to them. But most importantly he would listen to me when I had questions, concerns, and even differing opinions. It was no surprise that he was the surgeon I picked when over a month ago my 14 year old needed to have her gallbladder taken out. I can still hear him telling my daughter your mother she is absolutely crazy. We only had a short times in the am to talk with him (unless on call) where as each of you in his family have had years with him. I can’t imagine the grief that you are going thru as my own can be so difficult at times. I do know that God is a good God and has a plan that is greater than we could ever imagine so with that I accept that he is in Heaven with God and since there is no sickness he will be using the skills that he so enjoyed in his off time. My prayers will continue to be with each and every one of you and I will continue to keep the memories of my favorite doctor close to me.

I will miss him very much. Such a great man taken way before his time. Our hospital will never be the same.

Dr. Latham Murray performed emergency surgery on me at MJH on Sunday, September 13, 2009. He saved my life. In follow-up visits in his office, I found the most conscientious and most affable physician I have met in the 74 years of my life. I feel devastated by his untimely death.
My deepest sympathy to the Murray Family.

It is with stunned surprise that I offer my sincerest condolences to Latham's wife and children, whom I never had the pleasure of meeting; and to his parents and brothers - whose names I learned many years ago to call in chronologic order whenever I have reminesced about my many days and nights at Panorama Farms.
I have never forgotten the pleasure of my time with the Murrays, nor the welcome always extended to me and others in our band of Holy Comforter buddies, all great friends of "Larry's," as we knew him then.
Though we grew apart over the years, I am flooded with memories as I see his photo. I know he will be missed greatly - and his many accomplishments appreciated proudly - by his family and friends.

Latham was a collegue I respected during my time practicing at Martha Jefferson. We helped each other many times with difficult cases. He was also a friend. We could talk at length about non-medical issues. My condolences to the family and the MJH staff. This is an enormous loss.

Dr. Murray performed surgery on my husband last year. When he was in the room and came out to talk to me after the surgery I was pleasantly surprised at his smiling face, little jokes, and his so friendly manner. You do not see this often anymore. He certainly was an "exception".
We were truly sorry to hear of his passing.
May God hold his family close in His Loving Arms and give them comfort today and always.

We would like to extend to Dr. Murray's family our sincerest condolences. He very likely saved the life of our then-seven-year-old when her appendix burst earlier this year. He had a lovely beside manner that put at ease both patient and parent. We hold him in the highest regard and will keep his family in our prayers.

I am overwhelmed with sadness to hear of Dr. Murray's death. I am a nursing student at PVCC and was so glad to not only have him as my own surgeon this summer, but to have gotten to take care of one of his patient's this semester at MJH. His kindness and bedside manner were amazing. He truly loved and cared for his patients. He worked so hard and yet, he had such a purpose in life to help others. I know that he really enjoyed what he was doing. I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to get to know him. I am so sorry for this enormous loss to your family and our community.
