Roger Flint Obituary

Roger Benedict Flint, 86, of Pinecrest, formerly of Charlottesville, Virginia, peacefully was received into Heaven while surrounded by his loving family, a daughter, Pat Young-Mallison; grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Joey, Day and Will; great -grandchildren; Grace and Tanner, his loving caregiver Resa, and his friend and Dr. W. Lee Young, III at Frye Regional Medical Center on May 19, 2007.

Roger, fondly called the "Chief", was born May 26, 1920 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to the late Dr. George M. Flint and Hazel Fox Flint.

He was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville, Virginia for over 40 years where he served as an Elder, Senior High Instructor and many other capacities. He was currently a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hickory. Mr. Flint was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Roger graduated from Allegheny College, Pennsylvania. He began his long career in the soft drink business in 1950 with Dr. Pepper in Roanoke, Virginia. "The Chief's" final retirement was in 2000 from Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Central Virginia with 38 years of service.

He is survived by two daughters, Pat Young-Mallison and husband Joe of Hickory, North Carolina, Sandra "Tooter" Flint of Lafayette, Indiana; one son, Dick Flint and his wife, Vicki, of Roswell, Georgia; nine grandchildren, Day Young, Will Young, and Scott Morningstar and his wife, Joey, all of Hickory, Tara Pusey of New Hampshire, Brandon Pusey of Indiana, Nicholas, Chris, Sean, and Jackson Flint of Virginia; one stepgranddaughter, Beth O'Brien and her husband, Brice; four great-grandchildren, Tanner and Grace Morningstar, John, Brice and Jack O'Brien.

"The Chief" was a good and generous man who had many amazing accomplishments, too many to list. Governor George Allen recognized May 26, 1997 as Roger B. Flint Day in recognition of his life and the many contributions he had made to the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was "The founding father of recycling in Charlottesville", "a key organizer of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Clean Community Commission", "The Brains behind the original Jefferson Country Clean-Up Day", served on the Litter Control and Recycling Fund Advisory Board, and President of Charlottesville Tennis Program, honored by renaming the "Pepsi Mobile Tennis" the "Roger Flint Mobile Junior Tennis" (provides free tennis instruction to youth). He founded the Junior Excellence Tennis Program and Get Acquainted Tennis Club and was named "Mr. Tennis" by "Tennis Magazine" and by "Tennis Buyer's Guide." He was the chairman for seven years of the Boy Scouts of America and awarded the Silver Beaver.

The family wishes to express our appreciation for the care and compassion shown to our father by the wonderful staff on the third floor of Frye Regional Medical Center. Roger was also blessed with loving caregivers, Resa, Heather, Kristen, and Kim for whom the family will be eternally grateful. The family also wishes to thank Dr. W. Lee Young III, for his kind and compassionate care and his 34 year friendship.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Pinecrest (Activity Room) in Hickory.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. The family will receive friends following the service.

To the family of my friend, Roger Flint:

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Beginning in the 1970s, I knew and occasionally worked with Roger when he was at Pepsi in Charlottesville. He was, besides being very knowledgeable and motivated, one of the nicest people I ever knew. I have thought of him often and will always remember him with great fondness and respect. Roger was known and respected by everyone in the Pepsi-Cola Community. You were so very lucky to have had such a man for a father.

Roger and both my parents were among those individuals who were instrumental in starting CTPA in 1968 (my dad prepared and filed the incorporation documents), and I never saw Roger when he didn't ask, "How's Mother?". He was a doll to work with on committees and always cheerful and upbeat. I know you will miss him acutely as will so many other people. How lucky I was to have known such a good man (next to my dad, the best).

To the family of Rog,

At First Pres. we called him Rog. in youth group.
He was always saying things like, "Hows it going Baby?"
or "You're looking sharp today man!"
Roger's work with the youth at First Presbyterian was probably one of the greatest influences in my life.
I know he continued working with Senior Highs ,at our insistence, long after he wanted to step down and let others take over.
He was always a cheerful and positive influence on all the young people he met. He was one of my own children's favorite church members.
We love him, He is one of the many blessings our life.

To Roger Flint’s Family,

Chief will be missed. He made a huge difference not only to the Charlottesville community, but to our company as well. He helped shape our company into what it is today. Stories still float around Pepsi from his days here with us. I’ll always remember the way he ended his sales meetings with the saying “Grab ‘em and Growl”. I have had lots of people ask me about “Chief” or the gray haired fellow or the tennis guy. He made a difference in a lot of people’s lives.
We’ve enjoyed his visits since his retirement and will miss seeing him, but he will continue to be in our thoughts and our stories.
Words seem so inadequate in expressing feelings of sorrow, but please know that you all are in my prayers during your time of loss.
With deepest sympathy,
Suzanne Jessup Brooks

Such a wonderful man to many both young and old. A mentor to the many sales people whose lives he affected in a very positive way. We will miss him terribly but know he is in a better place now. May God bless this delightful individual.

Your Dad was such a great fellow - so giving to this community. His contributions to the tennis community here are legendary - helping make Ch'ville the #1 tennis community. He was also just a real nice person - and will be missed.
