Satyendra Huja Obituary

Satyendra Singh Huja

January 13, 1942 - February 14, 2025

He leaves his wife of 20 years, Irene Huja; his son Uday Singh Huja of Australia and his wife Sarah and daughter, Paige; his son Ajai Singh Huja of Oregon, wife Christin, and their children Meera and Simran; his brother Dr. Birendra Singh Huja of Hawaii and his wife Sushil. His eldest brother, Commodore Rabinder Singh Huja, passed in 2019 in Pune, India.

Born in Kohat, India (now in Pakistan) in 1942, to Jai Singh Huja and Shanti Devi Huja, he immigrated to the United States in 1960. He received his undergraduate education at Cornell University and Roberts Wesleyan College in Architecture and Psychology respectively. He received his BA in psychology with honors. He earned his graduate degree in City Planning from Michigan State University.

He was a follower of the Sikh religion, but attended the Unitarian Universalist Church in Charlottesville.

He was elected the Mayor of the City of Charlottesville and served two terms from January 2012 to January 2016. He was also a member of Charlottesville City Council from January of 2008 until finishing as Mayor in 2016. He was the first Indian Sikh mayor of an American city.

Prior to that he worked for the City of Charlottesville for 33 years as the Director of Planning, Director of Community Development and finally as Director of Strategic Planning. In his time working for the city he was a strong advocate for the construction of the Downtown Pedestrian Mall, Historic Court Square revitalization, University Corner revitalization, and Starr Hill neighborhood revitalization. In addition, he initiated the construction of Northeast Park, Star Hill Park, River View Park and the Rivanna Greenbelt. He advocated for housing for the elderly, people with disabilities and people living in poverty. He was responsible for the first adopted comprehensive plan for the City of Charlottesville, which included physical, social and economic factors in a holistic manner.

As planning director he initiated many social programs, including Meals on Wheels, the Mediation center, and Alliance for Interfaith Ministry. He supported the Art In Place program. Finally he was a strong advocate for the preservation of nature-particularly trees.

In addition to his work for the city, he was a lecturer in the School of Architecture, Planning Division for 40 years.

He served as deputy Director of Planning and Chief Planner for the City of Portsmouth, Virginia. He worked on many projects, including Portsmouth Marine Terminal. From October 1969 to December of 1970, he was the executive director of RNED model cities in Rochester NY and advocated for low-income families. From May 1968 to October 1969, he was a City Planner with the Rochester Bureau of Planning, major tasks included attitude research, and Genesee River plan.

His most rewarding job was serving in soup kitchen for 40 years.

He was the author of 6 books, including Poems in Prose and Line; Some Thoughts for Friends and Friends to be; Porch Swings to Patios; Community Planning and Development Outline; Add a Little Spice to Your Life; and Sikhism prayer in action.

He received many honors and awards including first in class for his Master's program; Bachelors of Arts Cum Laude; Distinguished Service Award at Wesleyan College; Outstanding Young Men of America (1972 listing); President's Committee on employment of handicapped; President of India Association; Honors from Virginia Society of American institute of Architects; Who's Who in America (2001 listing); Pew Foundation recognition for Downtown revitalization; Piedmont Council of the Arts Special Recognition Award; and Fellow of American Institute of Certified Planners.

He was a member of or served on many community boards, including Board of Monticello Area Community Action; Jefferson Area United Transportation; Piedmont Housing Alliance; Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center; Jefferson Area Board for Aging; and Art in Place.

His major interests were community building, planning, nature, design, art, travel, international affairs, and religion in its broadest terms.

He challenged himself and others to think out of the box - to find creative solutions.

Donations may be given to Meals on Wheels or the Charlottesville Municipal Band in his honor. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, March 1st at 3:00 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church on Rugby Road.

We are blessed to have known Satyendra through our son Ramesh when he first came to the US as a young doctor not knowing anyone. From there, Satyendra took a personal interest in his welfare. He & Irene even came all the way to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysian to attend Ramesh & Susan's wedding in December 2009 of which we will treasure forever. May his soul rest in peace and our heartfelt condolences to Irene and family.

I met Mr. Huja in his role as a City Planner when I served as minister of the UU Congregation of Charlottesville from 1984-2000. When I returned to live here in recent years we only had two opportunities to see each other at the UU Church, so my memories and my friendship with Huja precedes his political career in the city. We got to know each other through social service and political activism which he supported or attended or sympathised with. I felt honored to see him the first few times he attended our church services and hoped he would feel welcome and comfortable. Nobody expected him to be anyone other than who he was. Nobody needed anything from him in his leadership role in the city or needed to praise or challenge him because of his contributions to changing the face of the city. He enjoyed what he took from our sermons and music and worship, but he also enjoyed being part of this particular community that affirmed diversity of belief and practice as a strength in our community and not a problem. I remember how pleased people were when he offered a dinner in his home as an item in our services auction, because we knew of his reputation as a cook! It was also a way for him to signal that he felt himself to be a part of the community here. Huja was always warm and generous with me personally, and I benefited from his insights and wisdom about our community and the world on many occasions. I wish I'd had more time with him after I came back to town. My condolences to his family and all his many friends.

Godspeed Mr. Huja. Those of us who live and work in Charlottesville will miss your friendly example, high intellect and love of community and nature. We were lucky you chose Charlottesville to live and contribute, and you set a high mark for those who hope to follow your path. Certainly a life well lived.
Condolences to your family and friends.

Thank goodness Mr. Huja knew to immobilize and sink roots when it came to a project that promised forward movement, whether he was acclaimed or pilloried for it. I'm thinking of the downtown mall - which predated my arrival in Cville - but after living in Boulder´s own iteration it woke me up to what could happen. Acolytes and head scratchers alike, down the road we celebrated his vision and stubbornness.
All of us knew him in our own ways, but my strongest memory is his good humor and equilibrium [perhaps he was retired by then . . .?] His affability suggested a deep happiness with life and community, and I know you will miss that every day, Irene. A man who connects in so many ways is a model for all of us as we trek through life. Godspeed Mr. Huja.

I met Huja at our UUCC church. What a wonderful human! Always enjoyed talking to him. When I I would run into him in Charlottesville, he never hesitated to stop to chat. I even ran into him once at the airport in Oregon. That´s when we found out both our sons were living there. What a coincidence. He started the Soup Kitchen that still exists at The Haven on Sundays. He was the coordinator for our six groups for many years. He did so much for our church community and beyond. Prayers and hugs for his family.

My sister and I have fond memories of often seeing the Hujas on our morning walk to Greenbrier Elementary. Both were kind as could be and always happy to say hello and chat with two neighborhood kids. Of course, we were thrilled when we found out later he was the mayor!

I go back to the day I was sent as a 'temp' to Huja's office in 1985 to transcribe a draft document. I was new to Charlottesville so had no idea where I was headed or what it would lead to. This total stranger opened a meeting that afternoon for office staff, and I heard him ask "Who is that person out there?" Much to my surprise he insisted that I sit in on the meeting. There was no good reason for me to be included but it was his inate good manners, curiosity and kindness to make everyone feel part of the circle. We came together again many years later and again I was swept up but this time as a trusted friend and (almost) family member. The world lost a very special and Unique--in the best expression of the word-Person. But he showed us the way to be. One last Valentine of love.

In his 33 years as head of Community development in Charlottesville Huja made vast improvements in the quality of life in the Woolen Mills Neighborhood. His work in preservation helped maintain the fabric of our community. His vision to introduce citizens to the Rivanna River recreationally via a trail and park has been transformative. His traffic calming actions made walking safer. He was good to us.

I have admired Mr. Huja for many years. He was so talented and creative! We Charlottesvillians were very fortunate to have had him as planning director, city councilor and mayor. Many of the things we enjoy about Charlottesville today are due to his vision.

With thankfulness for his life and sincere condolences to Irene and the family.
