Frederick Wise "Fred" Sherman Sr. died on Monday, July 6, 2015, at the age of 86 in Orange. Fred was preceded in death by his brother, Welford Sherman, and a sister Jane Harmon.He was born on November 5, 1928, to Welford Ashton Sherman and Anna Ward Sherman. He married Lulu Herndon on June 18th and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lulu Herndon Sherman; children, Frederick Sherman Jr. "Rick" and his wife, Sherry, Susan Southard and her husband, MB, Page Miller and her husband, Joseph, and Benjamin Ashton Sherman and his wife, Julie. Fred had 10 grandchildren, Brian Couch, Gwen Ward, Taylor Sherman, Courtnay Couch, Allen Miller, Amy St. John, John Miller, McKinley Clore, Grace Sherman and Sarah Sherman; four great grandchildren, Kaley, Kamyrn, Nolan, and Jude; and three sisters Mary Anna Lawler, Sarah Cowherd, and Alice Bovee.Fred was active in the community for all of his adult life having been a Life Member of the Orange Lions Club. He also was a member of the Orange Volunteer Fire Company, Town of Orange Technical Advissory Committee, elected to serve on the Orange Town Council, and the American Legion Post 156. Fred's love was his work and his family. After his graduation from VPI he served in the U.S. Army as a pilot in the Korean War. Upon his return to Orange he worked side by side with his brother Welford as owners of W.A.Sherman Company. For 58 years he was the familiar face for the many customers of the company. He could have retired 25 years ago but chose to keep working. His love of people was his source of enthusiasm and energy.Fred's love of work is only overshadowed by his love of family. Family gathering at the family home on Christmas Day were a ritual for many years. Planning and hosting a family birthday party or trip to Nags Head was his joy. Fred loved his church. As a child he would walk with his mother to the Orange Presbyterian Church and for the next 80 years he raised his family and worshiped at OPC. Many significant life events happened at the Church he attended as a child.A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Orange Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Nickels will officiate. Interment will be private at a later date. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 9, 2015, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the church.Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Orange Presbyterian Church, 162 West Main Street, Orange, VA 22960.Preddy Funeral Home of Orange is assisting the family.
