Shirlie Camp Obituary

Shirlie S. Camp

June 30, 1933 - May 10, 2025

Carrsville - Shirlie Steinbach Camp, age 91, died Saturday, May 10 in Charlottesville, VA after a brief illness.

Shirlie was the daughter of the late George K. Steinbach and Frances K. Steinbach. She was born in Tomahawk, WI and moved to Franklin, VA at age 3. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, William M. "Billy" Camp, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Georgia S. Williams of Collierville, TN, her brother Roger K. Steinbach (Ann) of Suffolk, VA, her four children, Carrie Camp (Thomas Crowder), Holly Camp, Edith Camp (Tony Trundle) and Billy Camp (Cammie) and 8 grandchildren; Mason (Shannan), West and Bennett Camp-Crowder, Mac Morecock (Lindsay Case), Hollis Camp, Hugh (Mackenzie), Henry (McKenzie) and Chris Camp (Efrat Abramson).

Shirlie graduated from Franklin High School and began a short nursing career before marrying Billy and moving to their Carrsville farm, Holliknoll, in 1954, where she resided until her death. She devoted her life to raising 4 children, dogs (54!), horses, goats, and even a deer, pig, and a raccoon. She was very involved with the farm, particularly the naming of the annual 'crop' of harness horse foals. The names of 'Giraffabath' and 'Pink Sweater' live on in infamy.

Planning her gardens and decorating her house was a lifelong joy. By patiently planting annually, she transformed a nearly treeless property into a handsomely landscaped home. Holliknoll Farm is a beautiful place that has provided the backdrop for many parties, family weddings and homecomings. She was active in the Garden Club of Franklin and opened her home for multiple tours.

Her great love of dogs was surpassed only by her love for babies. She was a natural grandmother and a visit with Grammy at the farm or beach was a highlight of her grandchildren's upbringing.

Shirlie had many artistic interests and talents including decorating, sculpting, painting and needlework. Her excellent eye for proportion made her excel at flower arranging as well as picking winners at a dog or horse show.

The family would like to thank her dear friend and caregiver, Sallie Barnes.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2025 in the chapel at Franklin Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Qualls officiating. Burial will be private in Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin, VA. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in her memory or donate to treesvirginia.org.
