Dorothy Maxine Harris Terrell departed this life on Wednesday, October 27, 2016, to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.She was born on March 21, 1942, in Charlottesville, Va. Dorothywas preceded in death by her parents, Mary Allen Harris and William Christopher Harris; and her son, Donald Norris Terrell, Jr.She is survived by her daughter, Delisa Monae Hawkins-Terrell and Nicole Cheri Hawkins-Terrell, wife of Seattle, Wash.; two granddaughters, Keedra L. Terrell and Shannon T. Lockett, both of Charlottesville,Va.; a great grandson, Shaun Devon "SJ" Jenkins; an aunt, Helen Jones of Bridgeport, Connecticut;an uncle, Linwood Allen of Schuyler, Va.; two nieces, Leslie Harris Scott and Rodney, husband and Christina D. Harris, both of Charlottesville, Va.;two great nephews, Christopher E. Scott and William F. Washington, III;a devoted friend who was like a daughter, Lucille Bransom Taylor (Kevin); special friends, Barbara Jordan, Florence Thoms, Dirie Payne Harris, Katherine Dukes, Lillian Inge, Stephanie Taylor, and Debra Griffie; along with a host of other family members and friends; and as well as her dog, Skye, whom she adored.Dorothy graduated from Jackson P. Burley High School in 1959 and then attended Hampton University. She returned to Charlottesville and worked for many years, as an LPN, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. After retirement, she moved to the state of Washington to be closer to her daughter and began working for the Veteran's Administration Hospital.In the past several years, after suffering from a severe heart condition, she decided to return to her "home" in Charlottesville, Va. and began her journey "home". She began volunteering at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, where she enjoyed sharing information with patrons about the history of Charlottesville from an African American perspective.Dorothy was known to never meet a stranger and would help others in any way that she could. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and playing the PHASE 10 card game. She will be remembered for her kind heart, bright smile, strong faith in God, and the ability to make those around her laugh.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Alvin Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial GardensThe family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toJefferson School African American Heritage Center or the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church Building Fund.J.F.
