Terry Hawkins Obituary
November 5, 1943 - May 15, 2022
Terry Winn Hawkins, 78, of Charlottesville, transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at home with his beloved family by his side.
Terry native to Charlottesville, Virginia, was born on November 5, 1943, to the late Joseph P. and Frances (Butler) Hawkins.
Terry was elected Sheriff of Albemarle County, from 1988 - 2000, after serving decades with many law enforcement agencies, to include, University of Virginia Police Department, Richmond Police Department, Albemarle County Police Department, and still holding the title of Special Deputy with Greene County Sheriff's Office. Terry attended many schools to further his criminal justice education; most proudly attending the FBI Academy. Terry was a member of many organizations, he was the past President of the Virginia Sheriff's Association, Rivanna Ruritan Club and Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #5. He was still an active member of the Elk's Lodge #389 and the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. With his free time, Terry was an "avid" golfer, attended UVA sporting events, enjoyed spending time with his family at Myrtle Beach and exercised daily.
Terry is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Kathy (Herrion) Hawkins; his son, Scott Hawkins (Deanna); his daughter, Michelle Cahill (Todd); his grandchildren, Connor Dight, Katie Cahill, Connor Cahill, Jake Dight, Hayden Cahill, Emma Cahill and Ryan Hawkins; and his sisters, Diane Houchens (Charlie) and Susan Carter (Kent).
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22903. Additional viewing will be from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at First Baptist Church, 735 Park St., Charlottesville, VA 22902. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, May 19, 2022, at First Baptist Church. Burial will be private at Holly Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Terry's honor to the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #5, 974 Michie Tavern Ln., Charlottesville, VA 22902.

Terry was one of the most passionate individuals I have ever known ..whether it was playing golf or cheering on the Hoos. I will have the great memories of him driving us to Williamsburg for a golf getaway and another when he took us to the Homestead to play. It was always a great adventure and I thank you for those memories!!

To the Hawkins family,
Mere words are not adequate to express my sympathy and condolence on the passing of Terry. While there is little I can say to assuage your sense of loss and grief, please take comfort and solace that all of Terry's infirmities have been Lifted, and he now has Crossed Over. Terry always was a warrior, and he fought the good fight to the very end, but now he can go rest "High on that Mountain".

Terry and I met when we worked closely together at a local law firm. We became fast friends and remained friends after we both left. He was so devoted to law enforcement in the Charlottesville/Albemarle community. He will be greatly missed.
