Walter "Jimmy" S. Harris
November 21, 1939 - May 26, 2021
Walter S. Harris, "Jimmy", 81, of Faber, Va., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 26, 2021.
Jimmy was born on November 21, 1939 in Charlottesville, Va. to the late Walter S. Harris Jr. "Toy" and Nell C. Harris "Nellie." In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary T. Harris, October 24, 2020; his daughter, Mary G. Ramsey, "Mary Jane", August 8, 2018; and brother, Irving W. Harris, December 21, 2013.
He is survived by his children, William D. Thurston of Crimora and Larry A. Goolsby (Debbie) of Tybee Island, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Todd Watson (Cindy) of Buckingham, Julie D. Shreck of Charlottesville, Stanley W. Ramsey III "Trey" of Faber, Nathan Thurston (Carissa) of Harrisonburg, Jordan Thurston of Verona, Kristy Thurston of Stuarts Draft, and Michael Goolsby of Cumberland; seven great-grandchildren, Robert Cole Watson, Shane Watson, Cole Lewis Jamerson, and Haden Morgan of Buckingham, Taylor Watson of Shipman, Ashlynn W. Compton (Seth) of Lynchburg, Raylin Thurston of Verona; a brother and a sister, Arthur S. Harris (Dot) and June Dale Harris both of Faber; as well as several nieces and nephews. Also, his faithful sidekick and lifelong friend, Calvin "Cal" Harris.
For years, Jimmy was the neighborhood mechanic and proud owner of Harris Grocery and Garage, alongside his wife Mary. When he wasn't in the grease pit tinkering on a vehicle, you could find him chugging along in his favorite Ford dump truck heading to his next haul.
He enjoyed the simpler things in life such as farming, growing a garden, splitting firewood on a cool fall day, celebrating the holidays, and toking on King Edward cigars while sharing one of his many larger-than-life adventures surrounded by family and friends. But most of all, he enjoyed the "Ole Lady's" cooking, as he would fondly call his wife. If Jimmy was nowhere to be found, rest assured you would find him tucked away in the back kitchen of their little country store, enjoying a piping hot cup of coffee, a spread fit for a king, followed by a healthy slab of freshly baked pound cake. Nothing brought him more joy than a rib-sticking meal and the love and devotion that went into preparing it.
Jimmy was known for his compassion towards animals and the love he had for his critters was unmeasurable. His garage was jokingly considered the community pound. All those that knew Jimmy could attest to his profound love for cats, dogs, and his beloved cow, Annabelle.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Almost Home Pet Adoption Center, 29 Stagebridge Road, Lovingston, VA 22949.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2021, at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Michael Hevener officiating at Adial Baptist Church in Faber.
Arrangements by Wells-Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, VA (434) 263-4097.
