William Atkinson Obituary

William H. Atkinson, also known as "HAP," passed away on May 19, 2023 at his home in Stanardsville, Va. He was born on November 12, 1929 in Falls Church, Va. to the late Thomas W. and Dorothy M. Atkinson. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel "Monk" F. Parr and siblings, Thomas "Toby" D. Atkinson, Dorothy "Dingle" A. Ealley, Barbara E. Fredrickson, Alice E. Lester, and James "Jimmy" E. Atkinson.

William was raised in Arlington, Va. and graduated from W&L High School in 1948. He went on to work for Dixie Sheet Metal for a year before joining the Army. He served in the Army for 21 months before joining the Army Reserves as a Supply Sergeant. He then went back to work in 1952 for Dixie Sheet Metal, where he bought into the business in 1957. He finally retired in 1997 after 49 years, but stayed active in his later years. He served two years on the Board of Directors at Falls Church Chamber of Commerce and three years on the Board of Directors for the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship School in Fairfax County.

He was a member of the Arlington Moose Lodge 10 since 1951 and became a life member after 50 years. He was also a member of Elmer Timberman Lodge 54 since 1973 and served as the worshipful master in 1982. He served as District Deputy Grand Master for Masonic District 1-B in 1992. He was a member of Rosseville Lodge 397 in Rosseville, Ga. and an honorary member of Piedmont Stella Lodge 50, King Solomon Lodge 194, and Linn Banks 126. He served as a work master in Piedmont Stella Lodge in 2010, Alexandria Scottish Rite, and Kena Shriners.

He married Ethel "Monk" F. Parr, in 1952 and she later passed away in 1989 after 37 years.

He later married his wife, Janice R. Ipsan in 1995. He moved to Stanardsville in 1997 and lived a wonderful life at the foot of a beautiful mountain. Janice took wonderful care of him and they lived a beautiful life together. The Lord looked out for him and gave him two wonderful wives.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Janice Atkinson, sister, Rita M. Hunter and husband, Dave, special nieces and nephews, and four stepsons and their families.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Holder officiating, followed by Masonic Rites. A reception will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Swift Run Baptist Church. Burial will be private at Evergreen Cemetery with military honors.

Janice, I'm so sorry to hear of Haps passing, while Bob knew Hap better than I did I found him to be a wonderful and devoted person. I know the last year has not been an easy one but he was able to have a long and beautiful life. My prayers go out to you as you lay his to rest. Thanks be to God and his Grace for a life well lived.
