AGE: 85 • Basking Ridge, NJ

Alan Milton Shaw, 85, of Basking Ridge, NJ, died after a short illness at Morristown Medical Center on the evening of Sunday March 6 , 2016. Born July 23, 1930, son of Samuel and Mildred of Bradley Beach, NJ, Mr. Shaw attained Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After graduating Harvard Law School, he served in the U.S. Army, Quartermaster Corps becoming a member of the New York State Bar in 1959, he joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. In 1966 he helped start Athlone Industries, Parsippany, NJ as Vice President and General Counsel, which company he served as Officer until its sale in 1993. As an Arbitrator specializing in contract disputes since 1994, Mr. Shaw was active for over 20 years in the American Arbitration Association, affiliated with NYSE, FINRA, NASD Dispute Resolution, and Panelist, Contract Dispute Resolution Board of the City of New York. His great love of the law, language, teaching, and the company of lively intellects was gratified in his position of Adjunct Professor at Fordham University School of Law since 1996. For over 20 years, his commercial drafting seminar in business contracts and transactions was a source of great joy to Mr. Shaw and pleasure to his students. For over 15 years a trustee of the Washington Association of New Jersey, he served as Vice President and Chairman of the Finance Committee. Mr. Shaw was further a lifelong patron of the arts, not least Avery Fisher Hall, as well as a recognized benefactor of Morristown Medical Center. His professional affiliations included membership in the American and New York City Bar Associations, and the New Jersey General Counsel Group. In private life Mr. Shaw belonged to the Morris County Golf Club, the Morristown Club, the Harvard Club of NYC, and the Churchill Society. A devoted family man, Mr. Shaw was an avid reader of history and organizer of broadening travels both domestically and abroad his unquenchable intellectual curiosity led him to treat his loved ones to everything from the Renaissance art of obscure Tuscan churches to MoMA. His greatest interest, though, was in the company and discourse of his friends and family to this end his most enduring memory may be as most gracious host of long, warmly intimate dinners. He will be greatly missed.

Predeceased in 2013 by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Helen Knight Shaw, he is survived by his son Andrew Macbeth Shaw, affianced to Tamara Sand Lee, and grandsons Alan Macbeth Shaw and Theodore Tayloe Shaw and by his daughter Adriane Macbeth Shaw Walsh and her husband William A. Walsh, and granddaughters Margaret Macbeth Walsh and Elizabeth

Macbeth Walsh.

A memorial service will be held at Saint John on the Mountain on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 11:00 AM. The address is 379 Mount Harmony Road, Bernardsville, NJ 07924 (908) 7662282.
