Benedetta "Betty" Calabro
Toms River - Benedetta "Betty" Calabro died suddenly on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Community Medical Center. She was 95.
Born and raised in Newark, she resided in West Paterson before settling in the Holiday Heights Community of Berkeley Township 32 years ago. A graduate of Vailsburg High School, she went on to marry Anthony "Tony" Calabro in 1951 at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. Together, they bought a home and raised their three sons, Philip, Robert, and Anthony.
Betty and her husband Tony were avid bowlers and lifelong Yankee fans. They also had a very active social life, hosting many parties for family, friends, and neighbors. Betty and Tony were Passaic Valley High School Band Boosters. Betty was known to everyone in the neighborhood as the "Avon Lady." Prior to retiring, Betty worked as a payroll clerk for Automatic Data Processing in Clifton.
As a retired widow, Betty moved to the Holiday Heights Community where she was involved in a number of clubs. Betty worked Bingo nights and sang in the Holiday Heights musical productions. She worked the elections polls and at H&R block during tax season. She always looked forward to gambling in nearby Atlantic City. Betty also traveled for many years with her dear friend, Bob Cook.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Anthony in 1973, and by her companion, Robert in 2013; and her siblings: Eleanor, Frank, Arthur, Valere, and Tom.
Surviving are her children: Philip (Barb), Robert (Barbara), and Anthony (Robyn); her grandchildren: Kimberly Rold (Chris), Gregg Calabro (Kristy), Marc Calabro (Danielle), Ryan Calabro, Randy Calabro, Christopher Calabro (Katie), and RJ Calabro; her great-grandchildren: Brenna, Tessa, Dylan, Dante, Charlotte, and Declan; her nephew, Jack DiRisio; her niece, Francine DiRisio Kempton (Howard); and her great niece and nephew, Marissa and Jon Kempton.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 from 3-7PM at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10AM at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Toms River. Interment will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty's name to the Holiday Heights First Aid Squad, 120 Prince Charles Drive, Toms River, NJ 08757.
